Greenland as our 51st state? How about a Gulch?

Our incoming President is very seriously eyeing Greenland as coming under the influence of the United States, not just as a stratigic base, but as an independent nation able to support itself with a huge wealth of natural resources. Oil and minerals top the list, and the 60,000 citizens are preparing for a vote to separate from Denmark. What say ye?

    Could it be that Trump has recently been read in on the possible future effects of the pole shift?
    If the effects are as mentioned in previous posts here, Canada and Greenland might become
    the new tropics and a breadbasket for mankind, assuming 'mankind' survives.

      If that is the case, someone should get in on aquiring some property before the price skyrockets. Even if the shift doesn't happen, Greenland may just be a good place to survive. "Vacation" property anyone?

          The "vacation" was sarcasm, rh, but although food crops can be grown, it certainly isn't a farmer's paradise. Greenhouses in Greenland would work. I must check on geothermal energy possibilities there. Greenland was formed by the same vent that is now making Iceland a lava bed.

            I knew the 'vacation' thing was a joke, although with a fer graders and bulldozers i'll bet you could put in a bitchin' ski resort! I think greenhouses with LED supplemental lights are a good idea, especially as they control the climate much better for the plants. I saw a Canadian guy has a very good design that takes advantage of the lower solar altitude. Geothermal is good too, as long as it doesn't go Grindavik on you ;^)

              Hopefully, that Icelandic vent under Grindavik is far enough away not to be worried about, but close enough to find a good source of geothermal power :) (edited to fix a typo)

    It is my understanding Greenland would need 60,000 citizens to apply for statehood even if the USA bought it and the current population count I see published here and there is 56,000 (even though this article rounds it up to 60,000). Yeah, I know, picky picky picky, but there it is.

    On the side, Canada becoming a 51st state is all in great fun, but not likely as each province of Canada would have a need to become a state of its own, adding a slew of new states (Canada has 10 provinces and 2 territories). Canada is not a monolith to be treated as a single entity like a "51st" state. I also wonder if the French in Quebec would take the move to become a separate nation rather than have Quebec be a new state in the USA. Just thinking out loud here. Oh, and I heard the provincial governor of Alberta would like to join the USA even if Canada doesn't. LOL, Trump's got a bunch of folks all in a tizzy again - ya gotta luv it! Buy stock in popcorn, LOL.

      I don't really think Greenland will become a piece of the pie, but as allies they would make a great Gulch. A few more residents might be welcomed by the current folks, and technology as it is would make a cold place quite habitable. Its climate and terrain may be inhospitable in most places, but not everywhere. Maybe, someday, we will find our physical Gulch, and maybe someday we'll find we already live there. One can always hope.

        You're probably correct, but it makes an interesting and entertaining conversation. I think Truman had a better chance when he ran that flag up the pole in 1947(?) in the aftermath of WWII, but it didn't catch any wind so here we are today. Greenland as an independent nation allied with strong ties to us would be OK. We do still have a base there.

        I do think there has to be a way to regain complete control of the Panama Canal, though. Having Chinese companies (hence the CCP) running both ends is not what I would call a secure asset.

          I'm with you on the Panama Canal.

          I can't figure out what to make of Greenland, though. I wonder if it's not just something to distract people while he does something else, and you are right about it making an interesting and entertaining conversation.

            I've wondered if there is a deflection/distraction strategy going on regarding the Greenland and Canada stories. Panama is no distraction, IMHO. One out of three ain't bad? LOL?
