Hope?

I just wanted to come on here to say that all hope is not lost. Often, I see posts in the Gulch, and I almost feel hopeless concerning the kids of today. I have been working as a high school teacher for 10 years now and largely despair of any hope for the future when working with the current crop of kids. I teach math and basically have to follow the curriculum but I always provide a reading list of books that I will consider for extra credit. Today I had a student come to me and tell me that he had just completed reading AS and wanted to find out what he had to do to get the extra credit. I asked him to tell me about what he had read. We had about a 20 min discussion, and it lifted my soul. Here I was talking with a 17-year-old and he gets it. He stated that obviously no real person would be a perfect version of any of the characters, he made correlations between real people and the book.

So I asked him,” Who is John Galt?” He though for about 30 seconds and then he said that he aspires to be able to say, “I am John Galt.” Guys, I was floored. I have offered this for 10 years and never had a student even consider reading AS. They always say that it is too thick. I feel as if I have reached at least one student and it has made the last ten years’ worth it in that one statement.

Send me your best students to Florida Tech. I have run a nanotechnology minor for years (advertised in the Gulch) and am about to debut a maker (3D printing, laser cutting, design and build) minor and a first-of-its-kind entrepreneurial maker engineering graduate school program.

I will check his interest and forward him your way if possible.

Are you at the Orlando or Lakeland campus? I am from Lakeland and graduated from USF in Lakeland for my BS and then Tampa for my MS.

Florida Tech is across the state in Melbourne and is private. Officially I teach chemical and biomedical engineering, but I teach most of the engineers on campus at least the materials science and engineering class.

Actual MATH has a way of revealing truth.
My shrug job is sewing machine repair. I can install and integrate robotic welders and painters palletizers and depalletizers. All manner of automated equipment. From Automatic Generator Transfer switches in state maximum security prisons to Water Treatment Plant controls. Arc Furnace controls. (That was an interesting job.) I now refuse. And I refuse to teach the next generation what I learned over a 30 year career. I should have had 10 more years in me….nope. The WOKE can figure it all out and make mistakes that were already made before. Congrats on turning at least ONE towards something other than collectivism. Let’s hope
    He doesn’t backslide just to
    Impress the girls.

I read AS as a teenager. I thought John Galt was my father. Truly my father 'Did it his way!' He outwitted the Union in another state when they threatened him. He was the General Contractor in Government endeavors, Private Companies hired him, they contacted him. He didn't have to hunt for a job. He just sorted through his offers. He was a half breed American Indian and independent as a person could be. I admired him greatly. He scared the heck out of my potential suitors. nb

Congratulations. I watched my father connect with kids over a 37 year teaching (education) career. An Educator assists integration of new materials and skills.
The model dad and I used to give this form function is as follows"
    Awareness
    Involvement
    Commitment
    Evaluation
    Insight
    Faith/Trust
    Wisdom ..... hopefully.

Evaluation sits in the middle; a constant activity at each of the other aspects. I hope this gives you form, as it has me, over the past 30 years.

That’s fantastic. I seriously thought about teaching math as my retirement gig. I know teaching (well) is a lot of work. Great job! Thanks for sharing.

I have been using teaching as my Shrug job. Working within the system and hoping to guide a few towards Objectivism.

Math is the way to go then. It is the least work from the teacher perspective and yet the most important for the student. Additionally, there are always openings for Math teachers as many are unable to handle the material. Ya, I don't understand why adults have trouble with math but honestly the majority of teachers are literally afraid of the subject. I have never need to place more than 3 applications to find a position and normally can take my pick between the ones that are offered.

Yes. Many "teachers" are liberal and stupid (no offense - but you know) and area scared of math and science. I have offered to help my daughter's science teacher in the classroom. I love science and math...which is why I'm an engineer.
