New discovery shakes up understanding of composition of Earth

Scientists have long posited the notion of "plate tectonics" where huge sheets of largely silica-based rock sits on top of a huge roiling magma core and that volcanoes happened where these plated shift due to "currents" in the magma core. Now all of that comes into question with the discovery of an aqueous diamond over 600 m below the surface of the earth. This discovery indicates that instead of magma interfacing with sections of rock above it, there is actually a huge ocean of compressed water potentially several times larger than all the current oceans combined. Picture a giant waterbed and you get the idea.
