It is unfortunate, but the diesel-engine EV charger is pure BS. These are the kinds of things that undermine all the correct things we poke fun at.
The insanity is forcing EVs on people, not freely choosing EVs. I would freely choose one for my next vehicle, and defend my sanity and right to do so. I would defend your choice to own an ICE as well.
But it's NOT that wasteful. Besides.

I doubt it is wasteful. Battery charging is about 95% efficient charge/discharge. The EV drivetrain is also about 95% efficient (motor and the variable frequency drive).
A diesel-generator is about 30% efficient. An gasoline engine (in a car, operating at varying load) less than 20% efficient, highway a little over 20% in some cases). 0.300.950.95 = 0.27 > 0.2.
This is just made up BS. A 350kW diesel generator, operating a full load, might consume the level of fuel described, but that is not the conditions for the recharge. This is Redneck math, and complete nonsense.
If you want to bitch about EVs, complain about subsidies, incentives, range (if you really need it, which most do not), or price. Acceleration, efficiency and maintenance are fundamentally better, period. Anyone asserting otherwise is lying or engaging in cognitive dissonance.
Long term. We will have self-driving cars. Mostly electric. Rental Fleets. Imagine if they were self-driving.
It's pretty obvious. If they operate in Swarm Mode like many small drones can. Accidents will be significantly reduced to the point of their only being the AI software people providing the insurance! Local Repair shops will go under (already getting hard to find).
But frankly... I am more shocked the Burning Gasoline is THAT inefficient.
The rare earth materials are mainly in the permanent magnet motors. We can mine them in the US and Australia, but we don't due to cost. In addition, alternatives are being worked VERY VIGOROUSLY.
One to watch is Iron-Nitride magnets.

These are cheap in materials, but hard to make, and have the highest theoretical energy product of present magnets. The problem is that the way they are made, only small particles can be made, and the magnets must be "bonded". With the rule of mixtures, this causes a weak large magnet.
The battery material and recycling issue is largely noise. They can be recycled readily, and already are. I believe this is another chaff shot by people who are irritated by being forced toward EVs and/or the haughty nature of Prius owners.

Regarding engine efficiency, thermodynamic engines are limited by the theoretical maximum, Carnot efficiency. To get high efficiency, high temperatures and high compression ratios are needed. The best practical engine efficiencies I know of are in the 60% range, for huge low-speed (90 RPM), direct drive diesel engines used in ships and large combined cycle gas-steam turbines. These can get to 60-65% efficiency, and do NOT scale down.
The average utility efficiency is 46%.

Range and cost are the primary issues for me. I don't have the parking space or the budget to own a separate car that I can't take on trips. My son-in-law bought a Tesla, and he seems willing to overlook the range issue. But every time I talk to him about it, I'm glad I don't own one!
I “agree” CO2 is not a disaster. However, one must recognize 1) gasoline is a limited resource and 2) funding terrorism by buying oil and gas is self-defeating freedom (especially at present market prices).
Range anxiety is just that. I do not feel like defending metrics on range needs, at least tonight. Individual examples are not the means to draw a conclusion. If you need longer range all the time (I doubt it), get a regular car. If you need it infrequently, rent or borrow one when you need it. Buying a full size pickup to commute and for the one time you need to move a bed, is foolish. Borrowing or a trailer works much better. Same with an EV.
No idea why we are fighting about this. The meme is a lie. Let’s not lie. Let’s force the idiots to deal with the truth.
Half energy per mile doesn’t take into consideration of a power grids inability to produce the power to recharge millions of cars. California at a fraction of the target for EV’s is already warning not to recharge as the power grid has rolling back outs.

Obviously we will run out of oil, because it is not unlimited. Come on. When? Who knows? Not our lifetime, or our kids. That I agree with.
The middle east isn't even remotely relevant to world politics without oil. We are funding terrorism by buying oil, quite clearly. The middle east, Russia, Venezuela, economies are 100% oil. If we didn't use it, they would be screwed. We wouldn't have to fund military and TSA and all the other nonsense we do to deal with them. Much cheaper. This is my main interest in reasonable, technically-credible options to reduce dependence in oil. Solar works. Wind is largely stupid. Pumped hydro and compressed air work great for energy storage. Hydrogen is the new green snake oil. EVs work, and reduce energy consumption by >50%. Yes, they need to be cheaper.
I do not buy cars thinking about leaving a city in in a forced evacuation. That doesn't enter my mind. I also don't worry about building a special bathroom for someone who identifies as an octopus... because both are such a trivial percentage. Maybe if I lived in New Orleans, but probably not, because I'd be dead from liver failure in two years ;)

I never believed in PEAK oil. But I am seeing recent signs, like Russian Oil output has declined ever since 2017, and Demand just keeps growing. Who knows how much oil there is. And admittedly, we are DECADES from making a dent with EVs. No infrastructure. We need Gen-IV nuclear. And should be cranking them out NOW!
