I totally disagree with the point made about women in the workplace. Couples who decide on a family who have strong goals and a foundation, will prosper regardless of the mother in the workplace. The whole concept of going back to the 50s, in this case, is not getting to the root cause.
The idea that people don't talk with one another in a "town square" setting is more a function of govt regulations and taxes that mean people work more, which means they have less time to devote to their communities. THis is not the fault of cable TV and internet. If anything, internet gives us virtual communities, such as this one, to express ideas and share common goals.
I guess, I'm pretty unhappy with this article overall. nothing personal, Xenok.
The part where he blamed cable TV and internet was a joke, that is what people are choosing to do with there time, which is a symptom of a more lazy culture not a problem with TV or the internet, but with people who spend all the time they do not have to do something else on the TV or internet.
One parent (not necessarily the wife) being home with the children is a big deal. I can speak to that from personal experience, and the difference I have seen it make in my younger kids lives and development to have mom focused on them during there earlier years. Our goals and commitment levels have not changed, but we found having both of us work outside the home and try to raise 4 kids... the kids were not getting all the attention they needed. We adjusted. I am sure there are some couples that can do it, fine but for us it was a huge game changer and the three younger kids are doing much better than our oldest as a result of it. So on that one, I agree that its a factor.
I also wish that he would have spent more discussion on the causes of the family break up rather than just saying hay we break up more often now.
