In a small business, a job needs to be done and the hirer can evaluate the applicants. In a corporation the HR Dept is a long way from where the need for a worker is. HR have their own more important criteria that are applied across the board. That's why successful applicants for jobs from marketing, research lab, to accounts, look the same, are the same age group, same facial expression, but enough of diversity. An applicant outside that cohort has to find a way to breakthrough.
I hope I am wrong.
