"If those of us who value free markets and individual liberty cannot see the desperate need to reverse course by now, then we will deserve the catastrophic consequences in the years to come."

The problem is not corporations per se, but corporations which depend upon protection of any kind by the Federal Government. The moment government gets involved in picking winners and losers, the American Taxpayer is the ultimate loser.

Corporations are government-created legal entities, so their very existence depends on continued government recognition and protection. I agree that the American Taxpayer is the ultimate loser (and as we are discovering, in more ways than one).

I would quibble in that government doesn't create modern corporations, it is individuals who do that. Corporations provide a valuable tool for entrepreneurs to start businesses and acquire capital. What I meant more specifically was specific actions taken by government (Federal or local) to grant special treatment to one business they don't grant to another, such as government-backed loan guarantees, trade protections, monopoly power grants (State insurance cartels), etc.

A liberal speaking to conservatives? Take his advice with a grain of salt, I'd say.

He fails to distinguish Rearden Steel from Associated Steel, or the Twentieth Century Motor Company (during the presidency of Gerald "Jed" Starnes Sr.) from the 20th Century post-Jed or the "Amalgamated Service Company," Lee Hunsacker, President. Or the Mulligan Bank from the Community National Bank.

They never were. I remember in the 80s, US corps took down their US flags, and said they were international. They were specimens of crony capitalism. No loyalties. Way back, I remember a pal gave me a tape, record in England, talking about teh Tavistock Inst. and how oligarchs would take over and destroy the US in favor of one wold gov.. We should have seen it coming, we never do.

the constitution as written does not prevent companies from using government power to enrich themselves. the constitution should say that no law shall be passed which takes from one person and gives to another- PERIOD.

Not one more dollar. Not one more vote.
And CG is correct this time. Corporations don’t have a political ideology beyond power.
It proves that there must be some regulation. Because people are people.

Thom Hartmann has been saying this for decades.
If everyone who is skeptical of corporate influence, who wants to send "stimulus" payments, who is dependent on gov't progs like Social Security to live, who believes conspiracy theories, who's mad a tech and trade for supposedly taking their jobs, and who is open to disregarding the Constitution because their cause is righteous all joined forces...

What does any of this have to do with the merits of the article?

It stood out that it said "Dear Conservatives". I think elements of the left are merging with the right. I'm not sure if the trend will continue or whether they will be in the majority. I am concerned it will continue, will be a majority, and I will be in the minority.
