We have switched from seeing the virus as the enemy to seeing our OWN government as our enemy for stealing our rights. About time.

I'd be happy if that were the widespread case, but many people are just ignorant and afraid.

I think its more widespread than the media is reporting. At least here in Nevada, where the economy has been destroyed with only about 350 corona-related deaths being recorded. The cure is way worse than the disease. People arent anti-social distancing at all, and our stupid governor is taking a lot of heat from people for crippling our economy

          I agree. Here in MA they are s l o w l y reopening, with idiotic caution.

For example, you can play tennis, but only half the nets are up, and only singles. Soccer and team sports are right out. Just stupid rules to keep the ignorant feeling safe, while the rest of us suffer.

My buddies mother in law died of Covid caught in a nursing home. However, she was terminally ill already (weeks/months, not another year). She would probably have died of a cold, the flu or a mosquito bite as well.

Restaurants will reopen next month, but with a bunch of stupid rules to protect 90 year old people with compromised immune systems, that probably shouldn't leave the house anyway.

...and no... one life is not worth infinity, not even the number of jobs lost from a month's shutdown. Sorry. Not even close.

The only reason people are sewing these seeds of fear so far is to damage Trump in the election. If he opens, it was too soon, and people will die. If he leaves it closed the economy is ruined, and people seek change. All parochial.

And as a Nevadan, I am trying to keep track of the recall Sisolak campaign. The shutdown tried to stop it in its tracks, but last I heard it went to the courts for an extension of the deadline and it was turned down by a demo leaning judge. Any news?

Recalling a leftist democratic governor is just not going to happen I think, especially in a primarily hispanic state.

I doubt he will survive another election, however, given he has such unemployment. The casinos wont pop back to their former glory with the restrictions. That will mean unemployment will last for years.

Now I have heard that the recall petition has been restarted. I'll try and learn more, I know a guy who was instrumental in the previous effort in the Fallon-Carson City are.

Indeed! The pandemic "rescue" for the TDS Demonrat dream of a crashed economy dumping Trump ain't working out as Fake News talking heads have hoped. The doubling down efforts of certain governors and big city mayors to keep the economy suppressed so Trump can't beat--laughably who?--at the polls will not end well for them. Me dino also predicts Porking Piglosi's efforts to fraudulently tilt the outcome of the reelection with mailed ballots will not work out for her either.

FAct is that trump oversaw the greatest economy in US history, and is THE one to oversee its recovery. Surely Biden isnt going to even remember what an economy is !! He will never make it through his term anyway with a clear head and memory. God help us if he wins

Right on, term2. I had a lib relative get mad at me when I pointed at her and said if to get rid of Trump the dems had to drain YOUR bank account, burn YOUR house to the ground, kill half YOUR family, and drive the US into a 100 year depression, then that is exactly what they will do - and after all that when Biden gets elected then CNN and MSNBC will work overtime to convince you it was all Trump's fault - and YOU will believe every word they tell you.

"The perpetrators of this blitzkrieg attack on economic freedom, the alpha authoritarians like Cuomo and Bill de Blasio, should be stopped. Lose at the polls. And go down in history as self-aggrandizing commissars in the story of the virus that caused economic suicide."

In simple American English, Hell Yes!

Thanks for the excellent factual recap and accurate, rational analysis, WD. 👍

A good article. Thanks WD. Some comments, which elaborate:

Point 1. The data being so imprecise, as is usual, how to analyze and how to deal with the problem, and by whom, becomes an exercise in guesswork.
Point 2. why they went so wrong. They did not so much as go wrong, rather they were wrong from the outset. Available data was/is weak, the wrong people were given the job. The most notorious case is Neil Ferguson of Imperial College, London. Ferguson would have been selected on his reputation as a scaremonger. Grossly large numbers of fatalities were forecast, this enabled governments to bring in measures otherwise unpalatable, the public, well msm, love a good scare so got what they deserved. Meanwhile, The Donald and Boris claim a great victory for their policies as deaths are so much lower than the experts predicted.
Point 3. Yes. But there is now evidence that NY was hit by a more virulent mutation from Europe rather than from Wuhan direct. Closing the border to China by Trump was the right decision, not closing all borders was a bad decision.
    Lessons-
    - the ability to mutate quickly reduces the chance of a one-shot vaccine being effective, so big pharma gets annual big on-going business! (shsh about Vitamin D, HCQ with zinc, etc)
    - lockdown at least in NYC was essential (IMO), but fast border closure could have avoided lockdown.
    - US experts (nearly all) and the solid phalanx of Demos were initially oblivious to the dangers, Trump followed advice that he was given, he closed the border too late, lockdown was inevitable.
    - The US, in fact everyone, should have learned from Taiwan, closed border fast, masks, ready with supplies of PPE that were not available to Chinese buyers! (see daigou) and no lockdown needed
    Point 4,5,6,7,8 Yes. Appalling.
so, from closing borders too late, lockdown was needed (IMO but perhaps only for NYC), economic calamity is to be treated by helicopter money, they say.

    Who did everything right? Taiwan
Who did everything wrong? The UK
    Interesting cases- Japan, Sweden.
What about China (well the CCP)? It looks like the inquiry is to be conducted by WHO, effectively a subsidiary of the CCP. There are books to be written on this, I do not see reparations. I'd like to see a court ..

On Point 2. Available data appeared to be weak. At the start of this whole thing the "experts" were touting this aspect as justification for relying on ridiculous "climate change style" models and for overreacting in the extreme, with all the political motives intended.

But is this true? Even at the start, it was known that the virus was SARS-CoV2. It had 76-97% genetic affinity with SARS-CoV that goes back to 2003. If actual science was to be used by the statist health experts, this fact should have been at the forefront of basing expectations on how this virus would behave. Meaning that like before, it would be a serious threat to the elderly, etc, and then peak and fade with spring into summer. The population by the fall would have reached a level of "herd" immunity and 2019-2020 season would have been just another bad one.

But no! We have to disassociate this concocted plandemic from any of that by renaming it CoVID-19 and interchangeably use that with Coronavirus. Never would they explain that CoVID-19 is the name of the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 and that it is only one of at least 7 types of corona viruses, most of which are no more serious than the common cold.

To me this is essentially criminal negligence on the part of the media and government bureaucrats. Instead of herd immunity, we got herd mentality.

People in NYC were kind of stupid to continue to ride the crowded subways as the pandemic was spreading. What an easy way to catch it.

The government has become the looter on the state level. They're looting our constitutional freedoms. The Dem love this because they became petty dictators. Their claim that the continued lock down in some state is for the health of their constituents. They want to destroy the economy and blame Trump.

Now that I've studied this virus very early in it's onset and watched current events I have come to realize that this whole thing was handled with very little attention paid to science. It's mostly whims and shootin from the hip. Interesting...

What's interesting is that the doctors are mostly talking about how overblown this is, but the nurses I know are petrified. One cardiology nurse I know told me about how one ICU patient gave a half dozen nurses and medical technicians the virus, and two died from it.

This really depends on your personal experience. I have an iron constitution. My late wife swore that I could have survived the Black Plague without showing a symptom, so even at 75 I don't worry, but I do show others courtesy, wearing a mask if they want me to.

Since I'm on a fixed income that's more than what I need to pay the bills, I've been spending more than usual, mostly on local, or at least US businesses. I figure that's the least seniors who have an assured income can do in these times.

Any vaccine is going to slow the spread of the disease, even if there are multiple variants around, so the sooner there's a vaccine, the better. Of course, the MSM are spreading the word how dangerous "unproven" vaccines are. Interesting how the anti-vaxxers went from being the villains to being the heroes.

My pediatrician stopped by for a cold one yesterday. His comments on how overblown this thing was is pretty enlightening... He's a smart guy, too...
