I have told some of you that I am starting a new business revolving around ultraviolet LED-based disinfection robots.

I would like to start a new trend to counteract the disgusting trend toward self-loathing that became so pervasive on the news this week and turn it toward an Objectivist perspective.

I am soliciting your feedback on the following.

#Your life matters.
We are creating value for you with our UV-based disinfection products so that you can have confident assurance of your health and safety. It is your responsibility to be your own keeper.

#Our lives matter. We will not sacrifice ourselves on the altar "for the greater good". Like you, we must make a living. We operate on the principle of value for value exchange. We provide you the best product we can make to improve your life, and in exchange, we expect fair compensation for our effort. We will not work for free. During this startup phase, however, we will allow you to beta test our product, with the expectation that you will provide critical customer feedback so that together, we can make our product the best that it can be.

Have you looked into the nano meter length of UV light? I have read that 207 to 222nm is best, it's a shorter wave length and kills viruses, germs and pathogens almost instantly. It does not harm the eyes nor the skin like what so many UV systems use; which is why they have to use robots in the first place. They use 254 nm which is harmful to the eyes and skin.

I think I still have a link but you can find info by looking up: Far UVC.
Just imagine, these lights at the entrance of hospital and governmental buildings, on trains, planes and taxi's.

Robots using Far UVC would be extremely efficient, tracing a building as fast a people move about.

Just an idea...good luck with your venture. When your up and running, I'd be happy to promote your business.

PS. MEMES UP!...you might need a laugh or two.

We are going to irradiate with a range of wavelengths including the range you mention. At this point, however, there are no LED's that irradiate at that range, so my students and I are using an old electrical engineer's trick to get at 207-222 nm in a convoluted way. 235 nm is the shortest wavelength LED right now. That will change VERY soon, and my new company is going to exploit the range you suggested to the fullest extent.

        Great.
Is it true that the amount of power to the light and the distance to the object to be disinfected are all interrelated in the final nano meter length observed.
That part had me confused when techies tried to explain why battery powered uv lights were ineffective.

The intensity of the light decreases sharply with the distance. Getting intense LED's at short wavelengths has long been a major challenge. That makes it both a challenge and an opportunity for me.

So the "Hand Held" Far UVC products would be effective at close range like, 1/2 inch above the surface.
Now I understand why no one has made a hand held Far UVC, battery powered unit.

            You'd almost need a variable power source...no?

Yes, we found in Hospice that viruses, germs and pathogens are in abundance on the floor, opposed to in the air, the walls or ceilings.

In clean rooms, 50-70% of the pathogens are on the floor, presumably hurled as projectiles from coughs or sneezes. The company's first customer last fall was a pharmaceutical company that couldn't get its drug approved because their clean room cleaning solvent showed up in low concentrations in the analytical chemistry profile for their drug. Booties are more important than most people realize.

    jbrenner-

That material is hard going! What I get from the two posts is:
Very clever stuff and good potential,
Yes to the ethical stance in not accepting government money obtained by compulsion,
Hints of progress on the late stage of CCP19 infection when everything else fails and the cytokine storm takes over, this would be a real breakthrough,
Your links are truncated, please check,
Since you asked, I am ok with the word we, but do not overdo it.
Ultraviolet light-based disinfection- not a new idea but still very interesting and promising. I suppose the key here is using the right power levels, frequencies and exposure. If you can get it to work in a commercial package it would be an elegant treatment.

    Interesting points-
HCQ acts as a ionophore to facilitate the transport of zinc through the cell wall which inhibits the replication of the corona virus.
ACE2, apparently children do not have these in the lungs, this is the entry point for the virus.

The benefits of hydroxychloroquine helped me to piece together information about how COVID-19 functions. What is listed below is part of an incomplete background that I will eventually put on the web site of my new company (Chem-Free Solutions) that is partly described at the following site and its first comment:
    https://www.galtsgulchonline.com/post...

The French health minister reported that an infectious disease doctor from southwest France had "cited four cases of young patients with COVID-19 and no underlying health problems who went on to develop serious symptoms after using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the early stage of their symptoms."
(https://www.bmj.com/content/368/bmj.m...) The French health minister's anecdotal remarks drew criticism from American, European, and World Health Agencies and media because they hadn't been validated by more rigorous scientific testing. However, Roche has "secured approval from China for its anti-inflammation drug Actemra (tocilizumab) to treat patients developing severe complications from COVID-19", and Italian doctors have seen positive results from this anti-inflammatory medication as well (https://www.bmj.com/content/368/bmj.m.... Actemra is designed to prevent cytokine storms by blocking interleukin 6 (IL-6). At about the same time, anecdotal reports of reduction in symptoms by hydroxychloroquine surfaced as well. Hydroxychloroquine has been used to treat lupus, a rheumatoid inflammatory arthritis autoimmune disease, for over half a century. Hydroxychloroquine decreases T helper 17 (Th 17) cytokines IL-6, IL-17, and IL-22 (Cruz da Silva et al., 2013) and has protective effects against accelerated atherosclerosis in lupus patients (Floris et al., 2018). The IL-6 pathway (JAK-STAT) increases corticosteroid production in adrenal glands to help stop the immune response and is Involved in C-reactive protein reactions and clotting

COVID-19 targets the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) to enter epithelial cells (Al Ghatrif et al., 2020), but also plays an anti-inflammatory role in renin-angiotensin signaling (RAS).

Earlier I stated that the antigen is digested by the ubiquitin proteasome system where MHC-1 is presented to the cytotoxic T cells. Causing a failure in the ubiquitin proteasome system is a possible path for long term pathogenic attack, as compromise in this system leads to an overabundance of undigested proteins that have led to Alzheimer's disease (Kotilinek et al.). Kotilinek et al.'s results "predict that the predominant efficacy of NSAIDs" on Alzheimer's disease "will be found in individuals with normal levels of COX-2, prior to increases in COX-2 due to inflammation or glutamate". The ubiquitin proteasome system has also been the target of anti-cancer drugs (Soave et al.) and autoimmune diseases like lupus as well (Bulatov et al.).

If MHC-1 binds too well to a foreign protein (e.g. gluten in Celiac's disease), then one gets an overexpressed T cell response and is said to be intolerant to that foreign protein. Other than those living in assisted living facilities, most people who are dying or are hospitalized from COVID-19 are exhibiting symptoms of Type 3 hypersensitivity. Type 3 hypersensitivity is common in people with persistent gut and/or kidney inflammation.

My family has a very involved history of odd immune responses. Piecing together this puzzle has helped me figure out how improper process control of eosinophils, the least understood of the immune cells (and if you are healthy, the type of cell in lowest concentration) has led to a myriad of conditions (cold-induced asthma, eczema, eosinophilic esophagitis, food allergies and intolerances, allergies induced by anaethesia, and even Alzheimer's disease). I think that I am on the cusp of understanding how all of this is related to failures in the ubiquitin proteasome system.

What helped me connect all of this was how hydroxychloroquine has long been used as a treatment for lupus, a form of rheumatoid arthritis. From Ge et al, in https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/113..., "pretreatment of eosinophils with MG132, a proteasome inhibitor that inhibits degradation of ubiquitin-tagged proteins", regulates Galectin-1, which appears to regulate eosinophil function, airway inflammation, and asthma.

    Chem-Free Solutions tentative sales pitch:

Are you or a family member constantly getting sick? Or do you take a lot longer to get over illnesses than most people? Are you asthmatic, have many allergies, or very intense allergic responses?

If so, then you should consider using our ultraviolet light-based disinfection products. Our products will include sterilizer boxes, floor-cleaning disinfection robots, and heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) solutions that, unlike our competition, create value for you by providing visual and/or spectroscopic evidence that your reusable masks and lab coats, your floors, the food you eat, and the air you breathe are CLEAN.

While our competition uses a single ultraviolet wavelength (253.7 nm) that deactivates most viruses and bacteria, almost everyone knows someone who, like my mother, acquired an infection at a hospital or assisted-living facility. We use a range of wavelengths that have been documented to disrupt the metabolic and protein functions of ALL pathogens, giving our products a built-in redundancy of weaponry with which to vanquish our viral and bacterial foes.

Our technology evolved out of my need to sterilize everything entering my bioreactors for my tissue engineering test bed research (curiosity) and my subsequent realization of the importance of co-opting the body's immune response to generate new organs. Very few people have made the necessary intellectual connections to understand immunology, tissue engineering, process flowsheets (like a chemical engineer), and process control. Even fewer know all the "maker" tools (3D printing, laser cutting, etc.) necessary to create products to serve this new field. With funding from the Kern Family Foundation, whose core values are curiosity, connections, and creating value, I taught myself and a class of 70 Florida Tech students these maker skills to fabricate solutions to make us a leader in the human organ manufacturing industry, with the UV-based disinfection products being step one in the company's development.

I am not your average professor. I don't want to beg for government dollars. I believe in value for value exchange, and think it is immoral to take money from taxpayers' (your) pockets unwillingly to fund research that will benefit someone else. I made enough money as a partner in companies that made pregnancy detection kits and converted waste to chemicals (Imagine feeding municipal solid waste dumps into Mr. Fusion from the Back to the Future movies.) that I have funded my research curiosities for the last decade. Now I am asking you to buy our products, to support our mission (as shareholders, not donors) at our Chem-Free Solutions crowdfunding site, and to support my Florida Tech students' crowdfunding site (as donors officially, but receiving a custom manufactured UV LED product solution when they graduate in April of 2021 as part of value for value exchange). Thank you for both supporting my mission as Florida Tech's Nanotechnology Minor Program Chair to provide the best education that money can buy and our Chem-Free Solutions mission to create a brighter future.

Mr.Thompson won't understand. Those of us not following Mr.Thompson may disagree on the content, but the idea is sound and the execution looks good. I'm not a marketing expert, nor am I a chaired scientist, but I do like what I read. Thank you jbrenner.

UV devise that you're planning on producing are an excellent concept. Not only in regards to Covid19 mitigation such devises could to used in short term after hospital care facilities (my wife who is an RN works in such a facility). Also, in an affordable version for in home use where you have individual with compromised immune systems, ie, cancer patients undergoing chemo. My brothers wife has breast cancer and is under going chemo: he has installed UV units in a number of air ducts of his home HVAC system. He put UV commercial floor towers in the bedroom and main living areas. My brother who is a retired industrial engineer fabricated a cellphone UV box to sterilized their cellphones after use. It seems a little over kill but if I was in his situation I would probably do the same.

My company is not going after the "cheaper is better" portion of the market. We are going after customers who are willing to pay to add assurance that their living environment is as safe as humanly possible (and be able to validate that for themselves). It is overkill, but it will pay for (pave the way) toward my turning the company into a tissue engineering (organ) company.

Just my 2 cents. Our skin is full of HELPFUL bacteria. I am NOT comfortable with the LEDs aimed at my face inside the mask.

But indirect lighting where the light shines mostly on the material of the mask. NICE.

Suggestion that it be an N95 Holder of sorts, so users could change the masks out (not sure your design).

    Good Idea, and Good Luck.

Not to downplay any of the research here but UV light is pretty much available for free whenever the sun shines. I was out fishing today in bright sunlight and got a mild OD of UV rays. As an added bonus I got a few nice trout that also provide a fair dose of Omega3 also pretty good for me. Another added bonus is I got my ass off the couch for some exercise also claimed to be good for me. Another bonus was I never once donned any kind of a face mask and instead I was breathing nice fresh air for most of the day. On the down side of all of this I might have to do a deep Tick check so I don't get Lyme Disease and I might have to wash some of this all down with a nice wine or some other adult beverage. I never did see a protester or looter where I was but I did see some deer, bears, eagles and lots of other critters who simply don't give a $hit about any of this Fake News of the day. I did have a Glock 40 just on the outside chance I ran into some issue that required some form of intervention but all in all the day was pretty much worry free. I have always practiced Social Distancing not as a rule but as a way of life because I like my dog better than most people I am forced to interact with. I sure do wish we all could depend on the Science behind what is facing us but as we all have seen even the science has a political bend that may or may not be guiding us in the right direction. We have a system where we get to elect those we cose to lead us but all too often we fail to elect real leaders. When we do get it RIGHT there are far too many who refuse to accept the will of the people and those are the ones we all need to shun and silence. In the grand scheme of things we must divide in order to conquer and there are far too many seeking the division these days and far too many drinking all the Kool Aid. Like anything, all things are good in moderation but UV light is free if you know where to find it and how to enjoy it safely. Our world is changing right before our eyes but it always has and always will so just roll with the punches and punch back when necessary. I don't have any need to Protest and I don't have any desire to fix what I can't fix. The thought of disinfectants in this world we are living in is way too deep to even contemplate except that we continually rely upon others, mostly incompetents, to do the fixing. When the right says it is a nice day the left says it is too hot, too sunny or too some other BS negative. Ayn Rand saw this all through wide open eyes and a simple but extremely deep vision of what our world is all about.

Thanks MCC. My intent was to take nothing away from the OPs original discussion but to shed some light on the current shape of things as I see them. Did Russia really interfer? Was there any real reason to impeach PDJT? Was/is the China virus just a planned pandemic designed to be set out upon this world by China to advance their world takeover? Are the scientists giving us real data and the best info or are they just winging it from their own political slant? Maybe we should just eliminate all the police and hope we all have enough ammo and can trust our elected leaders to do the right things to keep America Great. I am actually very disgusted right now and hope some day soon all these young people can decide if they are male, female or ailiens.

"...disgusted..." Probably the best word from my point of view as well. A lot of younger people around me vote "D" and spew the leftist mantra as though it were gospel and are clueless as to it's Marxist roots. I tell them what I think, but the future is theirs according to their votes and since I likely have 15 or 20 years to go I ask can you hold off on converting the USA into Venezuela until after I'm dead?
