Yuck!
Poor things. Apparently the storm dislodged them from their burrows underground.
They are considered beneficial because their burrows provide shelter for many sea-creatures, such as shells, crabs, etc.
The seagulls had a ball!

There is another weird looking "worm" (actually a slug) that we encounter during the Spring when hiking:

They crawl all over the place and you have to be careful not to step on them.
