I think in many ways we are already in a communist society. This kind of totalitarian bulldozing of the truth was common under communist regimes. It is worth mentioning here that two communist sympathizers - Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir - the Nobel Prize winning author of Existentialism and her wife, also a well known writer from France - who have been steadfastly backing Soviet communism, until they went to visit Soviet Russia. They were welcomed by fanfare but were limited to see and visit areas specifically permitted by the Soviet State. They were under constant surveillance while there.
The experience opened their eyes resulting in their quitting the communists party.
