Sharing something that made me laugh about myself recently

I'm not exaggerating, I am this out of touch with pop culture and, apparently have been for quite some time. FB forced me to take notice and I had to laugh.

I actually believed there were bands called:
Stoned Temple Pirates
Food Fighters

I never cared for the style of music so I never really took enough interest to find out.I do think my version made things way more interesting, no? In my own defense wth is a Foo?

I actually get a chuckle each time I misused these names (maybe 2-3 times in 20 years) and no one bothered corrected me.LOL

Go figure. :)

Both are names from the UFO culture.

The term foo fighter was used by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II to describe various UFOs or mysterious aerial phenomena seen in the skies over both the European and Pacific theaters of operations.

Though "foo fighter" initially described a type of UFO reported and named by the U.S. 415th Night Fighter Squadron, the term was also commonly used to mean any UFO sighting from that period. Formally reported from November 1944 onwards, witnesses often assumed that the foo fighters were secret weapons employed by the enemy.

To be ignorant of pop culture shows good taste.
The youth version of pop culture is to create, wear and identify with ugliness. This has a great merit, it keeps the olds away.

I love Gilbert&Sullivan. From what I have heard, Ayn Rand did not like or approve of it. But I don't think that that matters too much. Much as I respect, in fact, reverence her, I still must respectfully disagree with her on that point. I have my own mind.

That's funny, although, I got those right, (never listened either). I have gotten many other pop culture band names, lyrics and sayings Wrong.

I've always had a problem deciphering someone's speech when they speak fast, running their words together or just plain out and out mumbling. Many people say the correct word but do not enunciate the important letters, especially in song lyrics.

Examples: goin for a pizza cause nobody works. (just did a search and no such lyrics exists) Forget the band, TOO! laughing

"It's all about the face, no devil"...still don't know what she's singing...

I could go on but just know, I feel your pain...laughing

I always had issue with the "warm smell of colitis rising up through the air," Hotel California

Looking it up as a kid the idea of smelling bowel inflammation grossed me out. Then again, I do think the song depicted evil no matter how appealing it sounded so, at least from my perspective, it was par for the course.

"It's all about the bass, no treble." :) My kids listened to that one.

        Nope, colitAs, not colitis.
And that was an erroneous translation, too, according to the band.
"from Eagles management honcho Irving Azoff: “In response to your [recent] memo, in 1976, during the writing of the song ‘Hotel California’ by Messrs. Henley and Frey, the word `colitas’ was translated for them by their Mexican-American road manager as ‘little buds.’ You have obviously already done the necessary extrapolation. "
That is, little buds refer to the tender aromatic intoxicating buds of marijuana.

The melody is one of my favorites.

I think many who enjoy it don't even know what the lyrics says.

It is a great depiction of what CA is about.

I still have no idea though how to interpret these lines:

        "And in the master's chambers
        They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast "

        Who is the "beast"?

          Quote from Don Henley:

In the 2013 documentary, History of the Eagles, Henley reiterated:

On just about every album we made, there was some kind of commentary on the music business, and on American culture in general. The hotel itself could be taken as a metaphor not only for the myth-making of Southern California, but for the myth-making that is the American Dream, because it is a fine line between the American Dream, and the American nightmare.

Thank you very much for that interpretation. Thinking of it, I should have looked it up on Wiki before.

I was aware from the beginning of the philosophical aspect of the lyrics, it is obvious. Since I first heard it, I was totally hooked on it, for the melody and the guitar coda. Few songs invoke the same sentiments when you listen to it.

From Wiki: "The song has been described as being "all about American decadence and burnout, too much money, corruption, drugs and arrogance; too little humility and heart."

A perfect description of California. I would not apply it to the entire country, though. There are still enclaves of sanity and normal life. But California is probably lost.

During Sept. through Nov of last year I was Invited on overnight ride-along with the Vice Lords in south Minneapolis. I watched the fleeting moments of happiness that were exchanged for a deplorable cultural lifestyle of ignorance, poverty and addiction. It was explained to me by two of the elders that the "Lords" were formed as protest against a welfare system that gave just enough to...almost...get a hold, to get out of the system, and then was stripped away again. It was determined that using the "vice-es" of the affluent, white majority system was a path out of impoverishment. Drug traffic and prostitution was the "equitable" trade for liberty....despite legality.
And it turned...as a snake eating it's own tail. the vision lost. Law of unintended consequences. The elders I mention were a half generation up from the founders.....they remember the Why.
              Hotel California....Soma, Soma, Soma......

I wonder how many versions we could come up with on that one.

When working on the big Yachts with a company that designed and build custom furniture we often took long trips to marina's far away. To amuse ourselves we often came up with funny versions of the various lyrics to songs...many miles of laughter passed the time on those trips.

While attending university I volunteered to work as an announcer in the student radio station. I heard a tune on another station that I liked and asked what the tune by "Hollow Notes" was called. Graciously, the person whom I asked did not laugh and gently corrected the misnomer to Hall and Oates. Whenever I think of it now it brings a smile to my face.

One day, a decade or so ago, while teaching Finance, I made a pop culture reference as was my habit. A young man in the back of the classroom raised his hand asked, "Who's Pink Floyd?"

I stopped making pop culture references in class after that.

As for the Stone Temple Pilots, I preferred it the first time... when it was called Pearl Jam.

Courtesy among friends?? :) I'm of an age whose mind boggled at the Beatles. Couldn't even understand them over the screaming "tweenies"! LOL I've found, though, that their best music is magnificent in concert form.

I'm eclectic in my musical tastes. Their music doesn't resonate with me. Pop culture music and associated bands seem to play to a younger audience. Give me Anime/Gaming music any day and my latest fixation is Sturgill Simpson's new CD "Sound & Fury which I listen wirelessly from my recent purchased Iphone 6 through my new Miracle Ear hearing aids.
