I'm drawing Social Security in addition to my IRA distribution. So whenever I take my kids (and other current producers) out for a meal, I tell them I'm paying the check because "its a dividend on the money your contributing to my social security benefit every month." They like that.

I had a similar circumstance come up last week. I was sent out to a school system to upgrade networking hardware and got into a conversation with the local IT director about how the funding for the project came about because of some spending bill that made the funds available provided you were using a particular list of approved contractors. I told him "Sorry I'm playing the crony capitalist today - I don't approve of it." He seemed a bit surprised, saying "But it's paying your salary!" It's not like I have much choice in the matter - I go where my company sends me and they don't tell me the funding sources for the jobs before I get there.

I'm guessing that what he is really selling is plans to supplement medicare because medicare doesn't cover everything so people get supplement plans to keep their out of pocket expenses down. People still have to pay for that every month. To me it just sounds like he is selling insurance to people who already have medicare which, as khalling stated, is mandatory.

First of all, Medicare is mandatory. Therefore, helping people to make the best decisions for themselves regarding plans would not be immoral as long as you openly acknowledge the immorality of the government forcing people to pay into such a system. The same would be true of accepting a government grant.
