To Bomb or not

Accrding to press retorts and Presidential tweets we came within 10 minutes of being in another war. Based on the little actual facts know I was say the halting of the strike against three targets in Iran was a good decision. When Iran shot down out drone (that is an act of war) no lives were lost on a little money. My and many other peoples reaction was "Lets blow the suckers into the stone ages". Emotionally good geopolitically bad.
Trump asked a key question: "How many people will be killed if we strike these targets. Reply 150." He halted the strike saying the response was not proportional to the action. The correct decision. What he did do was increase sanctions on Iran. This will cause more damage and grief than if the strikes were carried pout with no loss of life .
I strongly suspect that if Iran does it again the response will not be sanctions but rather a somewhat larger strike than just 3 AD sites. It is likely to be Iran's Navy and/or Airforce (in particular it rocket and ICBM sites) or some other major portion of the Iranian military.
Restraint was called for in this case a repeat says they didn't learn from the sanctions and most likely won't learn without a great deal of pain beaning inflicted.

I agree, it was an appropriate response displaying the ability to weigh the facts and come to a rational, measured decision. There was an economic loss resulting from Iran's act, no loss of life. An immediate economic response is appropriate. IMO, it is rational to think there is an additional response (unmentioned in public) that will affect Iran's ability to act in this way again. Direct military action is not the only response available to the most powerful country in the world.

Perhaps more importantly, it was a good political move given the propensity of the opposition to repeatedly exclaim, "Trump is out of control!" This displays again just how big that lie is, and what hypocrites the opposition are.

I agree, it was politically advantageous to Trump. Economically, sanctions didnt work with N Korea, Russia, and others- and wont work with Iran. The problem is that the sactions hurt the people, while the "leaders" simply coast along enjoying their power over the people.

Unfortunately, the "people" are hurt both ways. Bombs or blockades. The American revolution was brought about by people not liking circumstances being forced on them. A costly battle was fought to bring about our country. Maybe we gotta force the people to fight in their country FOR their country. In my opinion this is what should happen in these latin american countries that are sending people here to drain our country. It is being portrayed by the lefties that is easier to come here and let us support them rather than fighting for their home. I know this is a simplistic solution to a complex problem.

I agree. the people of each country should fight for themselves. No government can survive for long without the support of the people. This sounds simplistic also, but without the voluntary tax payments that we citizens make, our government would collapse in short order

The mullahs have some decisions to make. If they jump the tankers again, their puny navy will be annihilated. With the U.S. carrier strike force in place, any air attack they try will get swatted from the sky. A missile strike at Israel will not end well for them.

Trump's decision was a smart one, as it painted him as being restrained and responsible. If he later has to respond more forcefully, his decision to do so will be understood.

The President is offering Iran the same thing he offers North Korea: peace and prosperity if they want it. Ironically, Iran's leadership is in a much better position to take advantage of Trump's offer, but I think Kim Jong Un will reach a point of understanding before the mullahs pull their heads out of the sand.

The out to get Trump Fake News will viciously pile onto any decision he makes, effectively ripping this or that apart only in their own twisted minds.
When a candidate, Trump was portrayed as power mad lunatic who could not wait to drag us into war. Oh, yeah, and the stock market was supposed to crash as quickly as he was elected.
Me dino is still waiting for The Donald to "be more flexible" with Putin. Wonder where I first heard those words used. Hmm, now thinking of a hot mike and of some for really real collusion.

One unseen aspect of the sanctions is how many deaths they might cause. Sometimes military action might decrease deaths compared to economic actions.

Trump knew from the beginning that Iranians would be killed. Multiple scenarios are planned by the military far in advance. They know what the effects are and Trump was told before he ordered the strike. He did not change his mind minutes before it would have been too late to stop because he had just been told what it would o.

The loss of the drone was $1/4 billion, not "little money". Iran's recent acts of war did threaten lives, and they have been capturing, torturing and killing people for decades.

Whatever the best response, which should be determined by military experts, the demands for a "proportionality" that 150 Iranians would exceed are absurd. That is not the standard for defense against a totalitarian dictatorship. Neither is the proper response more apologetics for whatever Trump does from one minute to the next in the usual sycophantic Trump idolatry.

This deep state action was intended to draw US into an escalating conflict or war. The EU leaders along with Hussein’s 3rd covert term have their finger prints all over it. It was a rogue action.
Anything the Lamestream media has told you about it is false propaganda.
This attempt is to save their asses from their corrupt game of pay to play payoffs , weapons and gun running and worse. They all will be exposed . This is not a game.
Billions to Iran , Uranium to Iran ,$1.8 billion in cash on pallets to Iran. Don’t get fooled again.
BTW we are already in the “Uncivil War”.

I'm hoping that Isreal will strike Iran's uranium enrichment facility, leaving it a radioactive wasteland and their military assets sometime in the future. because right now I don't think Trump will be able to get Iran to the negotiating table. The Dem's will never support a military strike seeing that they have Moslems as their fellow congresspeople. I wish that Trump would get a historian at a press conference to educate the media that Islam has been at war with the rest of the world for centuries!

When President Trump decides to "Bomb, bomb, bomb...bomb, bomb Iran" (to the Beach Boys song, Barbara Ann), the media will be the LAST to know about it, in advance. Remember Syria?

Good on him...and better that he isn't tipping his hand to these morons, so that CNN can be there with their cameras to show "the human side" of his "atrocities". On the other hand, maybe CNN SHOULD go there and be sure that the President knows what hotel they'll be staying in...give them a front row seat.

I give Trump the latitude to be commander in chief. He is a hell of a lot better than the last excuse for a president.

Will sactions work? I doubt it. That regime has no skin in the game. Its the Iranian people who make the money for them and they dont give a crap about their people.

Having a nuclear weapon is their ticket to ride. No nuclear weapon and their regime as well as N Korea will falter. It was a clever strategy which will be repeated I am sure.

They will try other acts of terror, and at some point, we will have to just send some bombs over their way to teach them a lesson. It worked in Libya with Reagan. Best do it before Iran gets nuclear, though.

Time and again it has been proven, the American people and in particular the politicians on both sides do not have the stomach or backbone for wars.
Better than 50% of POTUS military advisers are BHO holdovers and would love to see DJT start a war just so the left and RINOs can hang him.

This won't be Iran's last attempt. You can bet that the mine attempts on supertankers will continue until Iran brings upon itself war. They want it because they think they can use it to incite the rest of the Islamic world against the "Great Satan". And they may be right. Only time will tell.

I applaud Mr. Trump for his heroic action in refusing to start a war! just watched 13 Days (in October) again. Having lived through it, doesn't make it any easier. At the time I had a 3 year old and was a single mom. The fear was very real living at ground zero since Houston Texas was considered to be the chemical capital of the world.

But- 13 days was about Russia toying with the USA over putting missiles in Cuba for really impractical reasons. They just wanted to scare the people of the USA. So, removing the missiles was kind of a throwaway concession.

In the case of Iran, Its Iran building up its nuclear arsenal for its OWN survival. They will never willingly give that up, nor will N Korea. We put on "sanctions" that hurt the people, but the leaders who want to remain in power just chug along. Then we offer to take off the sanctions in exchange for an non negotiable stoppage of nuclear capabilities.

This is like someone extorting you out of the blue for a large sum of money. When you dont pay, he threatens to break your legs unless you pay up. If you pay up, he removes the threat of leg breakage.

    Yes but-
careful, measured and rational responses to aggression only work when the antagonist has a similar approach.
In the case of the current leadership of Iran I am not sure.

You act responsibly and restrained, then they are ready with nukes,
then you have run out of sanctions,
it is too late for a measured 150 fatality response.
Choices then are backing down, or what?

The majority view is to back down now, surrender tomorrow.

When you have the power to make the aggressor into a glass parking lot and the will to use it, careful reasoned response are a very good and key point. Iran know (it has seen ample evidence) that the President will act if the provocation is severe enough (Syria and chemical weapons come to mind and the aggressor has not shown any willingness to cooperate in the reduction of tensions and hostilities.

It is reassuring to have someone in the Oval Office who considers all his options before he acts.

You are correct....the problem with the Glass parking lot scenario is that the fools in the military industrial complex will want to occupy the damned parking lot afterwards, whereupon we will find that the parking lot does not actually include the whole country and the survivors and those people there that used to hope to get along with us....won't like us any more. and we will have a "million Screaming" Jihadists making our lives miserable while we try to rebuild their country and impose our western ideas on them....which they will not like. The Military industrial complex and our political leadership wont care because they will be making money hand over fist and the people that will be bleeding in our military are considered by the elites to be rif-raff anyway. Some in the political leadership actually want out country to be weakened anyway.
