After WW-I, with the defeat of the Ottoman Empire its large territory was re-assigned. New nations were created out of areas with populations having only tribal loyalties. Kings were appointed by the victorious allies, well mainly Britain and France, from the leaders of tribes that had supported the allies. The result was the same disorder that had existed under the decaying Empire. The Sykes-Picot Agreement was the name for the plan that set the new national boundaries.
