Mexico weighs retaliatory tariff against U.S. over border slowdowns

"Mexico is considering a retaliatory tariff against the United States over delays at the border that it is blaming on the reassignment of agents from customs inspections to dealing with the dramatic rise in migrants seeking political asylum.
The Mexican government says that U.S. efforts to step up the number of agents focused on migrants showing up at the border has left customs checkpoints understaffed and drastically slowed trade.

“We cannot allow this kind of unilateral measure by the United States to affect us,” Mexico Foreign Trade Undersecretary Luz Maria de la Mora said, according to the Mexico News Daily."

The second paragraph says it all. We are using agents to stop illegal immigration which Mexico encourages. When we slow it down they stay in Mexico and cause problems for the Government there. they (Mexico) wants the trouble makes to move on into the US.
Why don't they stop the illegals on their southern border rather than letting them swarm on through to the U.S, border.
I have a feeling that if they put on a tariff it will not go well for Mexico. Just a hunch.

If Mexico puts this crazy idea into play, they better kiss our aid goodbye. Trump will pull the plug. We have historically welcomed our Mexican friends into Texas. We couldn't even get strawberries picked this year. But we can survive without them.

That would be the least he would do. How about no money transfers into the Mexican state? He could shut down the wire transders into Mexico if he wants.

You are right about that! We stand in line at our post office (we only have one) and wait our turn while they send money home. But, we don't mind. Those people work hard and endure poor living conditions to help their families in Mexico. We hire them as daily workers and pay a good wage. I personally do this, so I know what I am talking about.

At least they would not be threatening to put on new tariffs to protect their jobs or create new ones as the USA has tried to do with tariffs. Look at how well that has helped the USA.

Not sure it is the tarrif or other things but new jobs are being created and employment is at an altime high and unemployment is at a 41 year low. Something is working.

Were the tariffs put on for any reason other than saving jobs that appear to leave the USA? An attempt to just punish the other country would easily be seen as a extra cost for US citizens and thus a loss. The tariffs save jobs and did not create jobs, except at greater cost than would have happened in a free market. Tariffs undermine a free market along with the many other government interventions in the market.
The fact that new jobs are created has nothing to do with tariffs but rather from the easing of regulations on the market, freeing up resource for entrepreneurs to create jobs and cause wage rates to increase, possibly at a rate higher than the government created inflation rate. Te chart shows how painful the tariff related jobs were to the citizens of the USA as they lost that amount of purchasing power.

Would love for Mexico to give the US any possible excuse to simply shut down the border wholesale and not open it up again until the caravans stop - or overwhelm the Mexicans and the cartels (ab)using them.

Impose a tarrif to punish the US for protecting it's borders. that would be asking for the border to be shut down. Wonder how long the tarrif would last with that situation.

If we declare the Mexican cartels (Sinaloa, Zetas, etc.) to be foreign terrorist organizations, that gives our military a stronger hand in helping the Border Patrol. They can then legitimately perform stop and search activities in seeking out cartel infiltrators, human smugglers, and drug smugglers.

Not sure that that is a good way to go. POSSE COMITATUS was instituted for very good reasons.
Military troops executing police functions is a really bad thing.

We have a real congressional problem. Congress today is WORTHLESS. I hope that people see that electing Democrats is a really self delusional thing.

It's almost laughable. Who do they think they are? Some sort of massive power or something?

Shut 'em down. Especially the money transfers.

It isn't 'they'. It's their stupid President. He is a nut! Certifiable. We have co-existed with Mexico for all these years and this idiot gets in office (I don't know how). Trump needs to stomp on him.

"They" refers to the word "Mexico" in the first sentence, and "The Mexican Government" in the second sentence. While the actual person referred to is Mexico Foreign Trade Undersecretary Luz Maria de la Mora, and who is almost certainly taking her orders from the President of Mexico, that is not how the report was written.

Mexico has a new president who is not exactly a genius.

Unilateral? You haven't seen anything yet.

Little jerks like him will be given a lesson he won't like.
