I predict the "competition" will split the vote and Atlas Shrugged will take the lead by a wide margin. This is why you should NOT vote for any other novel (especially those in their current top 40).
The only rational purpose of participating in such a (second-handed) poll is to subvert its stated purpose (which is to get people to read more), and reach out instead to the Steven Mallorys and Cheryl Taggart of the world.
PBS is running "The Great American Read" every Tuesday evening. Voting closes on October 18th. So we need to get the vote out and really make a push for AS. In one of the Tuesday programs coming up, AS is supposed to be one of the featured books.
Wonder if the Public Broadcast System will give us a fair "election". Better than NPR, I suppose, but still heavily reliant upon government funding, from what I understand.
I would hope she would say--that a hard-core big government-sponsored site is the PERFECT place, and way, to 'push back', if you will. I think highlighting the popularity and importance of AS--is a good way to possibly find others that might be 'enlightened' or might also have an epiphany.
I rather wondered the same thing. But then, I'm surprised that PBS included it at all. Maybe AS is the token "Conservative" book the network thought that they should include to appear fair. So let's make it a winner and surprise PBS.
No, you don't have to log onto Facebook, I'm not on Facebook, and I simply voted by giving my email address. I vote every day for Atlas Shrugged. It takes me all of five seconds after the first time. Please try again. Do you really want some of these other mediocre books to win!!!
Just a reminder: It's now more important than ever to vote for AS. With the Socialist gaining strength, we need to have AS to finish well and get it out in front of the American people. So vote and vote daily.
They urge book supporters to vote very day. Facebook voting is separate from email registration, and like other such polls, people are probably voting by both methods on the same day, Chicago-voting style.
I have found that the once a day voting by email registration seems to be implemented by requiring a 24 hour wait, which is not once a day: As your vote is registered 24 hours plus some time interval as a practical matter, you are pushed farther and farther back until you lose an overnight period and therefore a whole day. You can avoid that by using two email addresses and alternating each day to comply with the policy of once a day.
I have also found that if more than one person votes through the same IP connection you have to clear cookies in the browser.

Ironic
I didn't vote, sorry.
That's how I vote ;^)
Thanks for the encouragement.
