Example of Regulations Destroying a Business

I have a client who is in the trucking industry. He owns about 75 larger shipping trucks. Due to the MPG regulation changes it now costs 50% more to purchase a brand new truck than it did in 2008. He refuses to purchase brand new trucks and only buys older ones. He is not the only one in the industry doing this, which now places a premium on older, less fuel efficient trucks.
Part of the reason he steers clear of new ones is the cost. The other reason is that new trucks use untested technology. He doesn't want to shell out 50% more up front and then have higher maintenance costs on top of that. Any other stories similar to this out there?

It is my opinion that the solution is make them stop. That is done though Awareness, Activism, and Public Concern. A small concerted effort can have BIG BIG results.

The power companies were ordered by the energy department to clear cut under all towers, high tension lines, and remove foliage from around power lines. The DEP came into over 100 farms and ordered them to rework their stream banks. The Dep ordered the power companies to buy chicken manure and ship it to western Pa so move "carbon" out of the Chesapeake Bay. So Obama created millions of jobs. Worthless jobs, that just chew up profits, and get passed on to the consumer. I hope you are all enjoying the increases in your utility bills, to help the recovery. Oh that is right, all of us are suffering more. Regulation, it is everywhere. My one landlord was handed 500 pages of regulations that PA created for two businessmen. I just discovered that all horse stables need to be code inspected. Another new regulation.

Added note, I only looked for cars that could have 4+ passengers since anything smaller would not be comparable.

Perfect ammo for the argument against regulation! NPR had a segment yesterday and quoted Obama as saying that the new fuel effiecency standards that will be in effect in 2025 will help all americans save $$$ on gas. He forgot to mention the up front cost of the cars, the untested technology, and the potentially astronomical maintenance fees. And that's not to mention the possibility that the technology won't last as long as other less efficient methods that have proven successful & long-lasting.

This is not a company/corporate thing but I bought a new Chevy Aveo in 2005 for 8500 plus taxes and licensing. While costs have increased for new card in the 7 years since then attempt to buy a base model care brand new for under 12k today. I doubt it could be done, fact is I doubt it could be done for 17k. looking at GMs site today I could only find two models under 20k, in 2005 they had a dozen that started in the low 12k range. Those two were light duty trucks, which are not subject to all the regulation.

So a small car now costs more to buy than a light truck does. If that does not add evidence to your case I do not know what would.
