Well I lost my job. This may have been a good thing.

Well folks , a few hours ago the boss man walked in said it wasn't working out. This has been coming for months, we clearly had to many guys at the top end (where I was) and the guy I was hired to take over from has been back form his sick leave for many many months. I was getting a pay check, not something to undervalue, but the job was going nowhere- if I was the best guy they ever hired, I still had no where I could get promoted too. I was trying to figure out how to tell my boss that I was going to do work on the side and how to deal with the moral and ethical implications of that as a professional, Well That isn't a problem any more. I am 85% sure I am opening up my own business, but still might do additional work for others. It is a scary proposition, but well I think I will regret it if I don't. Can I create value? We will see.....

What does everyone think? Starting a business typically a good idea?

PS- thanks to everyone that replied to my last posting.

Good luck on your new beginning. Starting a business is a good idea if you are willing to do whatever it takes to be successful. I like the fact that you were not happy just collecting a paycheck. Sounds like you got just the nudge you needed. Look forward to you bragging about your growing new business.

An idea on extra income. I needed more money to help pay for daughter's college. I started putting my extra golf stuff on eBay. They sold quickly. Then I started going to garage & yard sales to find more items. Buying items for $2 to $5 and then selling for $15 to $25. The first day that you sell 12 items...it's party time. You don't have to beg for a job when you have extra income packed in that extra bedroom. Find something that you know about....I know golf clubs...yours may be purses or belts or china.
Extra income gives you the option of finding the job you want...and maybe creating that job yourself.

Congratulations on starting your own business, if that's what you decide to do. Am I reading it right that you will be consulting or free lancing in addition to the business, or is that the business.

well my skills are in Geomatics engineering (aka Surveying). My current thinking is that I will open my own business doing this, and then if someone wants me to work for them, I will consider it. The part of the work I usually do is "paper work" checking and signing plans, stuff like that. so I plan to hire contractors to do field work and drafting of my plans. but hey, anything is negotiable right?

Starting a new business can be quite scary and invigorating at the same time, especially if you have a family to support. I tried it once (when I was single) and it ultimately failed. However, I learned more from that experience than any job I've had since. I have often thought about doing it again. My hats off to you and wish you well.

Best of luck to you! It took me years to understand something a former boss told me about owning a business: "You'll never go back!" Self-reliance is a feeling like no other.

I wish you the best in your future endeavors! Yes I think you should most defiantly start your own business. There is nothing like the satisfaction gained from creating value and reaping the benefits of your mind. Depending on what you want to do the internet has made it so much simpler to start up and get revenue. If you create hand crafted goods I suggest etsy. I started selling about 3 years ago and It has been fantastic.

One of the best things I’ve learned from adversity is, overcome fear and believe in myself. The Serenity prayer is perfect for just this sort of situation.

Go for it! It is not easy, but it can be rewarding. You will feel the full weight, but also the portion of liberation! It may seem counter-intuitive, but starting a business in the midst of an economic downturn can sometimes be the best time.

Be prepared to work yourself harder, than any boss that you have ever had!

Also be prepared to be prouder for your achievements, than any boss ever made you feel in the past....

    Take the plunge...and 'good luck'!
