The War Between the States was the fitting result to a) the lack of freedom for many in the South and b) the unwillingness of Abraham Lincoln to respect the autonomy of the South once it had seceded. Lincoln was one of the most paradoxical figures in history.

I would agree if you replace the word 'fitting' with the word 'unnecessary'.

Did he say that before or after he killed 600,000 Americans?

Well, if you insist on declaring the southern states a separate country, then they couldn't have been "Americans."

Ah, but sauce for the goose, Mr Saavik...

The Union kept insisting that they *were* still Americans.

Here's the sad truth, however; over 300,000 of the dead were U.S. soldiers. Many more U.S. citizens were killed, bringing the death toll on the Union side alone close to half a million...

The civilian death toll on the Confederate side was undoubtedly much higher (but never properly measured, as I understand it).
