Why Bother? by Robert Gore

You try to ignore the ravings of the paranoid lunatic on a street corner, but if he’s waving a gun, you can’t. Protecting yourself is your first considerations. He may kill himself, but he may kill you. You certainly want to get as far as possible from him. As an intellectual exercise, imagine how the Chinese and Russian leadership look at the United States, its government, and those of its allies. It will get you labeled as a “sympathizer” or “agent,” but take the risk and try seeing the world through their eyes:

Good advice. Americans are often guilty of binary thinking, as in "You're either with us or against us," as a former President said. We also fail to understand other people's perspectives, or how their history has shaped their world view.

Russia has no real geological barriers to invasion, and has experienced repeated waves of barbarians sweeping through their lands. This tends to lead to cynical, fatalistic thinking and suspicion over other people's motives, so any approach to a Russian should be primarily an exercise in developing trust. The problem any form of representative government has with trust issues is the sometimes ephemeral nature of its promises, dependent on the changing will of its people. Seeing how we broke our promises of support to South Vietnam is enough to give any other nation pause on how much we can be trusted.

China's recent history over the last couple of centuries has been a pattern of abuse by other nations, both Western and neighboring Asians (Japan). Chinese are a proud people, bordering on racist in their conviction that the Han are the greatest people on Earth. Protecting the race is all important, even at the risk of violent conflict, though non-violence is preferred. As with the Russians, they view Americans as well-intended, bumbling, and dangerously unpredictable, like a child with a loaded gun. Our current President is a caricature of that image, so he has a steep hill to climb in gaining the trust of either nation.

Yes, I love that summary of how people view each other: the US binary protestant good-vs-evil thinking; Russian cynical, fatalistic attitude toward being surrounded by NATO given their history; Asian countries for whom race and nationality are the same thing; President Trump is a caricature of Russian stereotypes of the US.

I think all of this is very slowly going away because the reason for nation states is going away, but it's here for the rest of my lifetime.

I think there are millions of them, not that we all can gather at,(mostly) but I know there are many like minded folks that own property that is self sufficient, well defended and known to their close friends. Back in the day a lot of folks set up CB relays to allow for the limited distance a mobile could reach, if your "relay" of gulches is widespread, we are all interconnected. If one foot in the govt. world and one foot in the gulch can be the only reality, not only am I good with it - I know if the two collide, the relay always wins.

Let's turn this around. Since the USA is is often railed at and portrayed as the lunatic with the gun, what about the myriad of lunatics in the middle east and far east?Isn't it a matter of you can run, but you can't hide? Should we not find it wise to be prepared for any and all contingencies, and get as many allies as possible to support us?

I think you hit half of the implicit prescription in my article. The other half is stay as far away from them as possible.

A globalist economy and global mobility makes it very difficult to "stay away," particularly when they have a mission to convert or kill everyone else on the planet. Reinforcing people who show a determination to stay on the path to peace is the best non-violent solution we can hope for. George Washington's caution about "foreign entanglements" was easier to follow when our ocean barriers kept hostiles weeks away.

This is why the Constitution provides for a limited central gov't, gave Congress not the president the power to declare war, provided for a militia to protect against invasion instead of a large standing army.

Your view of other countries is mostly the governments'. The people of the world are finding amazing new ways to serve one another, with inventions that would have been unthinkable 20 years ago, and just want to be left alone.

If that is the Russian sentiment, I see a chess game afoot. Putin is no fool, as the the Chinese they are involved for the long haul. They are playing a they long game Russia into the Crimea and Syrian ports; China into the Pacific made island-submarine/military bases. North Korea is a minor annoyance to them, Islamic terrorism is a real problem for them. They have the right idea in treating the threat, shoot first ask questions later. We should be just supporting the Kurds/Peshmerga. Let the the other moderate Arab states fight ISIS. Have them use their oil money to buy arms to proactively defend themselves.

I get it, have seen it and considered it but the main problems of the world is a lack of Consciousness and Conscience to be topped of with an over abundance of "PROGRESSIVISM"!!!...the scourge of the earth and existence. The division in the world of culture is a shear lack of the concept and often reflects their dysfunctional governments. Few of us in the world have the senses necessary for a reflection of the worlds woes and inadequacies; yet, the antilectuals continue the march toward a global society, the exposure of which will not awaken the herd, promote an appreciation of one's property nor the tendency to Create value and not to usurp it.
However, after stating the obvious there is one more thing to consider, barbarism; and it's rampid. How can we contain it, how can we allow it to work it self out or destroy itself into non existence letting the rest of the world breath easy and move on to the long over due evolution of consciousness, peace and cooperation.

It's easy to see but difficult to swallow that progressivism has always put the cart in front of the horse...when will we learn that this is our true enemy, our true failing and might very well be our downfall.
I'd really like to have a better outlook than that but it's hard even when I can see through to the amazing abilities of humanity...I still see no way out of what's to come.
I may at some point, abandon my wish for immortality.
