Interesting article. Thanks. My take on the Golden Rule is that other people are not you; you are not them. Treating them as you want to be treated might not be what they want.
_The Five Languages of Love_ (http://www.5lovelanguages.com/) explains that even for people who are long married, getting gifts, words of support, touching, service, and quality time together are ranked differently. And they change over time. One time for an anniversary, I gave my wife diamonds, rubies, and emeralds (small ones). Now, she rates gifts a big fat Zero. She has enough stuff.
I just had a telephone interview with a headhunter. He was very insistent on my setting a billing rate and whether I wanted 1099 or W-2. I tried to explain that money is number five on my list of priorities. He never asked what the top four were. He had a list of things to ask; and that was not one of them. Different people have different interests.
The Golden Rule, practical version: He who has the gold, makes the rules.
The Golden Rule, modern version: Do unto others... then split.
Oh, you mean the old-fashioned Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Hmm... The golden rule is what prevents Objectivism from being simply hedonism enthroned.
To be Objectivist, as I understand it, you must respect the rights of others, just as you must require them to respect yours.
John Bernard Books: "I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. " - The Shootist
'do unto others as they would do to you - but do it first. '
Note this works with both friends and enemies.
