Sorry, thumbs down from me. This is a thin cloak, a lot like a white sheet, in fact. Myself, I always declare "two or more races" because I consider "race" to be a social construct only with absolutely no biological foundation. The sociological equivalent of "race" is "culture" and culture, however inherited and bequeathed can be enjoyed by anyone who passes certain rites of initiation, sometimes quite minimal: the global extension of American music forms and clothing styles are just two easy examples.
This Department of the Interior webpage cites six cases over 20 years in which appeals courts ruled that discrimination against so-called "White" people is also racial discrimination. http://www.doi.gov/pmb/eeo/cases/reverse...
Basically, Pat Buchanan is just being rhetorical at best. As a "right wing populist" many of his traditionalist political opinions are at direct odds with reality and reason. Just for instance: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/fr/642... and http://mediamatters.org/blog/2011/10/21/... See also a more balanced view of him: "Buchanan is the last of a dying breed of old-school right-wingers. Yet current American political culture owes an astonishing amount to this Irish Catholic son of D.C.’s Georgetown neighborhood, even as he fades into disgraced bestsellerdom. Notions such as the “silent majority,” liberal media bias, and the modern culture war all sprang, more or less fully formed, from the head of this former Nixon and Reagan aide, as did a Republican critique of “vulture capitalism.”
In fact, pretty much everything that constitutes modern-day Fox News can be traced to Buchanan, although Fox’s own fighting Irishman, Bill O’Reilly, is both less intellectual and less independent-minded than the prototype." here: http://reason.com/archives/2012/05/17/ho...
Why would you vote the discussion down when you clearly want to discuss it? I am happy to discuss. I agree with court rulings. However, in practice, Affirmative Action definitely discriminates. and not against just whites. How about Asians? The initial case you cite is a civil rights issue, not an affirmative action case which is the subject of the discussion on McLaughlin. The last case was upheld by the 5th circuit that the university made their decision in "good faith." After all, Affirmative Action is a Law! By law, they are to weigh applicants of of minority status heavier than non-minority status. If this was not the case, in almost every govt form you fill out it would not be necessary to ask your race! Look at any employment section of the newspaper to see that companies and federal and state employers scream for minority applicants for positions. Finally, "This is a thin cloak, a lot like a white sheet, in fact." Is this comment directed to LS? It is offensive.
Well it's on display NOW...it wasn't THEN. And I wasn't accusing YOU of wearing the lipstick, it had obviously gotten on your hood from someone else, who's name I won't mention in a public forum.
aHah! A "he"...it IS true! No wonder when you said I could borrow it was so far back in that closet I almost didn't see it at first. The SPLC (is that a real place?) wouldn't shoot a man in a hood(y).
You never have to identify your race on those government forms.
I choose "two or more" on employment forms because I believe that refusing to identify looks like non-compliance to an employer and they do not want to hire trouble-makers. So, I comply.
But you can ignore the questions about race and gender entirely.
The "white sheet" refers to Buchanan's ignorant self-identified "white" followers who claim "reverse discrimination." They are emotionally invested in their definition of their so-called "race."
See the DoD warnings about extremists. They see themselves as persecuted. Read "The True Believer" a book sold by the old NBI Bookstore, as I recall.
Myself, I never see it, not institutionally. I have seen all kinds of discriminations personally and individually based on size, shape, gender, schooling, college alma mater (or lack thereof), college fraternity (or lack), religion, ethnicity, military service, employment status... One time at a Blue Cross/ Blue Shield office where I was on a contract, the manager I reported to asked me if I went to church. Stuff like that happens all the time. Do you want to work for someone (1) so stupid that he cares whether you goto church or not and (2) so damned stupid that he doesn't care if he and BC/BS could get sued over that? I was out the door and that was fine. No sense in making a federal case out of it...
There's a scene in _The Fountainhead_ where the bad guys are bitching about Roark and one of the architects says, "You're just mad because he doesn't notice you." and the other one (Gus Webb, I think), says, "He'd notice me if I hit him over the head with a club." and the first one replies, "No. He would just blame himself for not stepping out of the way of the club."
and you're using the DoD teaching materials to ACCURATELY place Buchanan as an extremist? One would think you could find better materials than a left wing nut organization spoon feeding the government definitions of "hate groups" in your discerning.
There is a current article about the Department of Defense training manual that states, directly from the text:
"A statement that “Nowadays, instead of dressing in sheets or publically espousing hate messages, many extremists will talk of individual liberties, states’ rights, and how to make the world a better place.”
Let's see: "..talk of individual liberties, state's rights, and how to make the world a better place."
That makes almost everyone in here a terrorist, and a threat.
But it has been a while since we have been accused of 'riding' with the Klan.
P.S. The KKK was formed by Southern Democrats, who opposed The Reconstruction and freedom of the blacks. A great look at this can be seen in the silent film classic, "Birth of a Nation".
I watched the silent film "Ben Hur" the other night on TCM...the sea battle was superior to the modern film version, and the chariot race was just as impressive.
Then you might like The General, with Buster Keaton.
It is based upon a true Civil War event, but gets off track towards the end, as to the facts. Anything Buster did had to have a happy ending, and that wasn't the case in the true event.
There is no sense in being an apologist for minorities. I am in the minority where I live and do not need special attention paid to my skin color to move ahead. I believe that is part of the point of the post. I also will not support laws and regulations which limit my own freedoms. That was Buchanan's point. Is he a provocateur? Sure, he's in show business. Can we have the discussion? Well less frequently if people use intimidation tactics claiming racist! As a matter of fact, Buchanan's opinion is barely heeded on this topic, compared to President Obama who makes a racist statement a week as our number 1 statesman! Where was your thumbs down on that article last week? Bottom line: all sorts of people discriminate for all sorts of different reasons. It's life. Who would want to work for someone anyway who was discerning employees or potential students for a stupid reason? For example, in the first case you cited, the charge was theft. The fact the white employees sued the company and their case was heard based on Title VII shows how absurd some of our laws are. Thieves should expect to lose their jobs if they steal. Actually they were damned luckily they didn't go to jail! What the heck does Affirmative Action have to do with it?? Those last two questions. Are they directed to me? MY focus would be on speaking out on a legal system that allows someone to steal from their employer and turn around and sue for their job back. ALL of them should have been fired. The fact the company had an onerous responsibility to retain the black employee who stole IS the focus.
Stop reading and look around you. Fox news is quite fair and balanced in my opinion. Bill O'Reilly has some pretty good educational creds. You should get a thumbs down for the name calling and stereotyping. Think I'll just read elsewhere.
As long as college applications and tuition assistants programs ask "race" on their paperwork and make decisions factoring in what race the applicant is then it is blatant, legal racism.
Which is what I do...but if you WANT an advantage, and you know you will get one, most will happily give up that info and be happy that they're getting a leg up on someone else for no good reason.
Ducking under culture: 'The sociological equivalent of "race" is "culture' That is gobblygook. And it isn't the issue. White=white etc. everyone gets that. And the only socialogically accepted discrinination is currently directed against whites.
Here's what knocks me out. Most of the hireing is being done by white business owners. Isn't that kinda like biting the hand that feeds you? So, my premise is that those who really want jobs are not discriminating against anyone(outloud). Those that want a handout with no job are discriminating against whites.(it's good business for them).
Also, Bill O'Reilly is more intellectual than he appears. He is an ACTOR. Anyone with a noodle can tell his comments are dumbed down, and he oftens encourages his guests with supportive comments just to keep them talking. I think we all know where he stands politically and culturally.

But do not accept the government's word for it. LexisNexis sells a professional assessment, "Larson on Emolyment Discrimination." You can read the informative blurb here:

Last I remember, you had to use a pillow case with two holes cut out...and it was so embarrassing. ;-)
You're the one that tried to do her lipstick, AFTER putting your hood exactly like you liked it!
We all recognized your Punk Purple shade.
And you are right, KH...lipstick is the toughest, even for a dry cleaner....
Besides...Punk Purple has always clashed with my Chartreuse nail polish. I wouldn't be caught dead in it!
The SPLC is hoping that I will try to 'get' it back some evening...they have a 24/7 sniper on duty just for the occasion.
They will claim Stand Your Hood (read: ground).
White hoodies that come to a sharp point are the 'bad' ones.
Depends on which end of the sniper rifle you find yourself.
I'm mad that I didn't think of it first.... ;-)
I'll give you a fifth: 'You were right!'
That's the crux of it.... ;-)
Just stay mad...I'll just refill my gin and tonic! ;-)
Or one more gin (last call!)
Don't scare me...I am pretty old!
Newspaper joke, if I recall. ;-)
And heading there as I type....

Straight out of that other 'handbook', Alinsky's guide to Democrat politics.
How to Win Votes, and Influence the End of the Republic.

Didn't they do a silent film just a few years ago?

All liberals think that teachers walk on water, so Bill just might be the Second Coming.
