Texas Must Lead at the Border

Letter from Sen. Brian Birdwell
________________________________________
Texas Must Lead at the Border
Friends: This afternoon I sent the following commentary to our media outlets in Senate District 22, as well as to several of our major Texas newspapers. While it is important that the crisis on our southern border be given news coverage, we cannot count on that coverage to tell the whole story. I hope the information below is beneficial to you, and please know that I welcome your feedback and input—as always. Respectfully, Brian
"On Wednesday Governor Rick Perry, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and House Speaker Joe Straus directed the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to immediately increase its efforts to secure our porous southern border. In an expansion of the successful ‘Operation Strong Safety,’ the DPS will implement a widespread surge of law enforcement along the Texas-Mexico border in an effort to halt those seeking to illegally enter the United States.

"This is an issue about which I am extremely passionate. Contrary to recent news reports, what we are seeing on our southern border is not new—and it is not simply a humanitarian crisis. The federal government has knowingly refused to uphold its constitutional obligation to secure our borders and enforce the law. Furthermore, it has created an incentive for tens of thousands of non-citizens—largely women and children—to cross illegally into Texas, knowing that our policy is to simply release them with an unenforceable “notice to appear” before an immigration judge. While this issue is deeply troubling in its own right, I am even more concerned about the inability of our overwhelmed Border Patrol agents to stop the entry into Texas by those who wish to do our citizens harm.

"The status of our border puts Texans and other Americans at risk. While I refuse to accept that the management of the Texas-Mexico border is now solely in the hands of our statewide law enforcement—and on the backs of Texas taxpayers—I know that we cannot sit idly by while the shameful inaction of our federal government allows the situation to deteriorate further. Therefore, as the DPS proceeds swiftly to staunch the flow of dangerous drugs, violent criminals and illegal aliens into Texas, they will continue to have my firm and vocal support.

"It is my duty to look at all issues through the lens of the taxpayers whom I represent and the Constitution from which the Legislature is granted its authority. As we approach the 84th legislative session, I look forward to the opportunity to review the detailed costs and benefits of this new surge, thus determining whether it is in the best interest of all Texans to expand, contract or maintain this operation. Until then, it is imperative that we continually urge the federal government to uphold its sworn obligations to secure our borders and enforce our laws, and just as importantly, that we pray for the Texans putting their lives on the line to do the job that the federal government will not."

I commend Perry and Texas for trying. I am concerned though that the law officers will be overrun and out-gunned by the Mexican invaders without federal or at least multi-state support.

This is a good opportunity to strengthen federalism -- states doing what the Feds don't do or should not be doing.

In the present crisis, if Texas is overwhelmed, they could send out a call for help from other states in the region. Many southern states and Oklahoma would likely be willing to send some National Guard assets and personnel.

Think of the optics of that scenario -- states banding together to show the Washington pin-heads that border security is not as difficult as they say...

Texas needs to stop bussing the illegals to Phoenix and bus them back to and across the border; or send the busses to DC and have them unload in front of the White House and let Obama take care of them. We in AZ have enough illegals and don't need more.

hey -- Massachusetts may be helping, since they
are being invaded by air ("refugees" flown there,
with no notice) ... and there are other states in the
        same situation!!! -- j

Too little, too late. The intent of our porous borders is to create a population that is NOT self-governing. The intent of dumbing down our children is to create a population that is NOT self-governing. Unfortunately 1/2 of the Christian right has decided to stop voting - refusing to vote for the lesser of two evils. The result elected Obama and Senators who have an agenda different from true Capitalism. The damage is most likely already overwhelming against those who are able to self-govern under a Representative Constitutional Republic.

It is not too late to stem the tide...but it will be if someone doesn't make the effort.

The worst that can happen is that this move exposes the current regime for the hypocrites that they are....

          who would make the effort???

the republicans who are more concerned with their
own personal power and ascendancy to the top of
the heap (saying, "I've been here;;; I've earned it!")
ahead of others who have just arrived (Cruz, Lee,
          Ayotte, Flake, Scott) ?!!! -- j

What you said LITTLERED1977. Better to have 'em coming to Texas from everywhere than to give away our country with no say-so. And what Sen. Brian Birdwell led with in his statement above, "Texas must lead at the border." We don't have a few strong voices outside of Texas who agree with us, but we are IN Texas, and should "do it ourselves." If we do get things organized I will volunteer. And if we do get with the program I think other states will follow our lead.

Anyone else wonder why we can patrol and protect the border between North and South Korea for over sixty years, but we cannot patrol and protect our own border with Mexico??? This problem has been going on for over seventy years that I know of. Eisenhower deported over eleven million illegal's from Mexico when he was president, but now it is not politically correct to do that!!! How many terrorist have crossed that border along with the illegal Mexicans crossing the border? They are all invaders!

start putting land mines across the us side of the border, and then have machine gun nests behind that. this is a war on the usa. I may sound radical but the current administration is radically doing nothing and no amount of talk is going to change that. so that is what texas should do. I see I am not alone.
