Do I "Have To" read the books?

As I am dyslexic I would have never come across Ayn Rand without the movies, which as a young businessman made me angry. I just can not wait for the following Movie.
As i don't read books I have just downloaded Atlas Shrugged from Audible which is narrated by Scott Brick - that's good enough right?

As this is an introduction - I own a Mortgage Company which is heavily regulated with time consuming bureaucracy to ensure every legislative tick box is covered and I have to pay for a government body to swoop in to check my files. The other company is a Letting Agency - if the government made me choose to be owner of one, it would be the mortgage company - as this industry is thawt with lots of tiny bits of regulation. With more on its way many calling for government to cap rent (decide what we charge for our service) and political lobbies pretending to be charities calling for us not to be able to check out potential customers. Someone does not pay rent, have to wait 8 weeks before submitting a court document and weeks before being seen - to be told it'd be weeks before they have to move out ... but if they don't move out, it;d be weeks to wait for a bailiff to "try" and get them out.

Not that its all bad.

I am British.

I would suggest watching THE FOUNTAINHEAD which starred Gary Cooper & Patricia Neal, 1949. Well done adaptation! Similar themes. I will probably irk some people by opining that in Atlas Shrugged Rand could have used an editor. In any case there are a lot of elements that the book gets into that had to be left out in any screenplay under 24 hours in length!

Here's to building the real one!

Just read along, you'll quickly learn who is who and what is what.

    Looking forward to your input.

Welcome. I didn’t read Atlas Shrugged until very recently. I mulled over whether to read the book before seeing the third installment, but people around were very pushy so I didn’t have much of a choice! J/K I’m so old-schooled that I forget about exploring the audio option. I may have to try that, too.

I have to admit, I thought you were skipping the literature completely while trying to take up the philosophy. I was going to say good luck eating soup without a spoon. But I think that hearing it is just as good.

Watching the movies is good. However books always offer more detail. Books always make the authors message clearer. I recommend "Anthem" by Ayn Rand. It is short and easy. It is available for free on a Kindle.

    Greetings hosker4u,

I believe you will enjoy the audio book. Aside from watching the other movies including The Fountainhead and We the Living, you should check out the abundant youtube videos of her speaking in various interviews and other forums.

    Enjoy!

    Welcome, a good intro . .
Residential tenancies- a subject close to my heart. The Government here in WestAus has made more changes making it harder for owners to let out on their own and easier for bad tenants to evade checks.
" political lobbies pretending to be charities" very true, they help the worthless by putting up costs for owners, so increasing the rent that good tenants have to pay. As an owner do I care about tenants? I certainly do, I was a tenant for many years, now I always have a good relationship with my tenants, fine people most of them, mind you I do select with great care.
You ask- 'Do I "Have To" read the books?' I will not give instructions but there is no pleasure like the giving of free advice - if you do not read you miss a lot, but, I am a great listener to audio books while driving, so pleased to read good opinions of the AS audio.

Scott Brick's narration of Atlas shrugged is superb. I'm a recovering mortgage banker here in the US. I left the industry will before it crashed and predicted it for years before it happened on my radio show. with as busy as I am with writing, voiceover work, speaking, and my radio show and always have a chance to pull Atlas out and give it a proper read. Add to that my need for glasses as I have aged and in order for me to read Atlas is my sharpen the saw every January, I get together audibly and let Mr. brick read to me. I have hundreds of books on audible and can capitalize on reading time while traveling were that time behind the wheel is traditionally lost for regular visual book reading. good luck with it!

    Welcome to the Gulch.
I hope you purchased the unabridged version. My local library doesn't have the book, and only the abridged version on CD. I wanted to listen while walking a few miles in my shoes on my treadmill. I was disappointed in the abridged version. It left so much out. I have read the book several times and am doing another reread currently.

Edward Herman did a wonderful job on the abridged version and for someone who cannot commit to reading for 65 hours, it's a great substitute. If you are willing to pay the price, the unabridged in my estimation is the only way to go.

I actually bought the Audio book for a friend of mine from China who speaks English very well, but has trouble reading it.

I was impressed with the audio book.
