Who is Dagny Taggart?

Beautiful, tenacious, and fearless, Dagny Taggart has inspired women and men alike for over 50 years.

As Atlas Shrugged Part 3 heads to production, some major decisions still lay ahead. For the past several months, we've read all over the web everything from "Taylor was PERFECT!" to "Samantha IS Dagny!" to "You should have case [INSERT NAME HERE]!"

Now it's time for you to tell us directly. Who is Dagny Taggart?

Taylor from Part 1? Samantha from Part 2? If you had to pick someone else, who would it be? Beyond her ability to embody the character of Dagny Taggart, what else should be considered when casting Dagny? Should she already be an advocate of Ayn Rand's ideas? Should she have at least read Atlas?

    Put simply, Cast from P1=Capitalism P2=Socialism. I thought the cast from the first film was great. I couldn't understand why they changed it for P2 as the actors weren't that high profile to turn down the role and re-casting seemed to break the continuity. Did not like P2 because of this. ReCast P1 for P3 and ReFilm P2 with the cast from P1 ; )

    My wife and I differ in opinion as to which Dagny was better. I say it was Samantha Mathis. She was strong and smart, but displayed appropriate emotion at the correct times, whereas (I felt) Taylor Shilling lacked emotion of any kind. My wife liked Taylor Shilling and thought she displayed a more accurate portrayal of Rand's Dagny. So, 1 vote for Shilling, 1 vote for Mathis.

    I second Lena Headey. Or Piper Perabo. I think the whole cast should be replaced. Not because they were bad, but because Atlas Shrugged isn't about the actors. And the first two movies already have different casts, so it would be odd if the third did not.

    But if it's between Taylor and Samantha, definitely Taylor. No question.

    I was in my early to mid-twenties when I first read AS and had a secret crush on Dagny. Since I am a sucker for brunettes, I naturally perceived Dagny as being dark haired. I grew to accept Taylor while watching Part I so I would like to see her in the finale. Samantha is more mature and could possibly have made the business exploits more believable but I just could not warm up to her as much as Taylor.

    Kathryn Morris, (the main character from the TV show "Cold Case") she is my ideal Dagny. She is a good actress and looks the part - as long as the person is a good actress, I don't think they have to share any of the philosophy. Someone who does share the philosophy but doesn't come off real would detract from the message.

    The solution is to imagine who would play Ayn Rand as a young woman. Not a Brit ... they really don't understand capitalism - it has to be someone who sympathises with laissez-faire capitalism.
