The primary difference between man and beast. The reason for mans dominance over his environment - his innate curiosity to explore and create. He has determined his own needs and then devised how to satisfy those needs as he see fit.

Man's ability to adjust his background (read environment) gives him something no other living creature has. The ability to end all live on Earth with the "push of a button". Likewise, it also gives him the ability to save and preserve Earth. In particular, this ability opens the way for colonies on other planets and eventually other solar systems. What better way to protect humanity than spread it so an idiot on one planet cannot end human life eith the push of a button.
