The biggest failure of America has been the continual buildup of corporate welfare since 1860 when Lincoln was elected with nearly exclusive support of northern industrialists wanting high protective tariffs. That eventually led to the bankruptcy in the 1930's which allowed socialist reforms and widespread "voter welfare" programs.
