This is one of the older business streets about 3 miles from where I live. I can not remember there being a business other than a tattoo shop on this block in 15 years. The tattoo shop moved to a better location 3 years ago. This is one block in a 4 or 5 block long section of the old polish section of town. My best guess is 50% of the buildings have no businesses in them or have been torn down. I don't think the RNC has used this office in 20 years but the signs are still up.

I did hear on the radio that the City wants to have a special tax to raise money to put in new street lights and fix up the fonts of the buildings so that business will move back in. The building on the left had it's font rebuilt 3 - 4 years ago and has never had a business move in.

I will try and find more interesting places to take some pictures.

Around here (Sacramento and the Sac Valley) I have thought of actually making a table book of such photos. Right in downtown Sac, on J St (the main street), many of the sidewalk level spaces are empty. It's like a zombie movie, especially with the crack heads wandering around. It's the only place I've ever seen a McDonald's go out of business - one block over on K street years ago. Capitol of California...go figure. Total shite-hole...

Great idea but I don't know who would buy it.

I have so many ideas of places to take my little pads and take pictures.

I live in Grand Rapids, MI and this is the best City in MI and we still have tons of empty space and much less of the small business than we did. Some has moved, some I don't know if it just went under and never returned.

Now if I really wanted to get good pictures I would drive to Detroit.......

I think it would sell, actually. Some of these places, right here in the once-great-agricultural-bread-basket valley, have really interesting old structures. They tell a story of a time long lost. Photographically, they are interesting. Over the past 20 years around here I've seen many of them, after sitting empty for 10 or more years, torn down. I've also seen farms abandonded north of here...right out of the old dust bowl, over the past 10 years. Meanwhile, the "have's" are buying up the coast (I plan to join). Everything else is crumbling.

After I posted that I did think about it and I think it's a great idea. I have seen some pictures of Detroit that are before and after and they are very interesting / sad.

There is also an photographer that does current color pictures and puts in old black and white things from the past into the pictures to really show the contrast.
