I am not convinced that there is any way to control a convention of states. That once one is formed, the 'progressives' will incorporate the new deal 'rights' and more.
Keep in mind, the current constitution was written by a group of people who had a mandate to revise the articles of confederation, not to write a new constitution.
Actually there was no mandate to re-write the Articles, only a bunch of aristocratic statist Hamiltonian politicians wanted to increase central power. Hamilton was the leader of this gang of looters and he wanted a lifetime president among other things that the Revolution had been fought to ban. (Read Thomas DiLorenzo's book Hamilton's Curse. It is a superb reference on the conspiracy.) Only the persistence of the anti-federalists produced the Bill of Rights to temporarily derail the Hamiltonian monarchy plans. I agree that the con-gress can pervert any convention for its own statist goals. Other than a mass conversion of GOP and Sanders voters to the Libertarians, the only peaceful step that might have a chance for success is a grass-roots state by state production of a single amendment that establishes the original definitions of the limits placed on government by the language of the constitution, making it much more restrictive than it has been translated since 1850. If 75% of the state legislatures have already approved an amendment then the con-gress might be prevented from meddling with the will of the people. Its a long-longshot.
