I grew up in Miami in a house that only had a heater.
But, we had a huge fan in the hallway ceiling that drew air from the house and into the attic. With the windows open, and the fan on, the air moved though the hose like a tropical storm, and was actually quite effective.
Currently it's a little smokey with the windows open, but it's worth keeping it as cool as possible since the heat doesn't hit here until late afternoon.
