High School Graduation Gift (Book) Suggestion

Hi All,
My nephew is graduating High School soon and I want to give him something, probably a book, that would help encourage hard work, responsibility, independance, etc.

He's not a big reader or else I'd just give him Atlas Shrugged. His family (Mother and grandparents especially) is pretty far left generally speaking and I want to try and give him something that would illustrate the importance of these values.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

I suggest he become a "big reader" so to speak.

I would give him a couple things so he isn't completely blind the rest of his life.

    1) The Bible and why he should learn it
    2) Shadows of Power
    3) The Creature of Jekyll Island
    4) A conservative history of the United States

It is the lack of wanting to read anything and just absorb the mass infiltration of electronic media and digital ooze that creates no so "big readers."

I would love for him to embrace reading. Just don't want to push because normally when you push someone will push back in the other direction.

      Thanks for the suggestions!

Hi Imarrott. Have you considered Anthem?

As well, I think Heinlein, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress would be a good choice.
Of course, the gulch is teaming with authors who write about those themes, yours truly included. :)

      Very true.

Anthem would be good, because it is short and very easy to read, but it also illustrates what is possible in the negative.

I am sorry to admit that I haven't yet been able to pick up any of the resident authors books. Whenever they are posted I add them to my Amazon wish list, but haven't been able to get one yet.

      But good suggestions!

      Thank you very much!
