Earth Day celebrates human achievement. The earth supports billions of us at a plush lifestyle unimaginable to people in pre-agricultural times.

As we might expect, billions of us living an affluent lifestyle incurs costs, sometimes on other people. Earth Day reminds us those costs can be borne by people anywhere on Earth. It could be climate change making the glaciers recede more or faster, which affects farming, probably increases certain types of storms, and raises sea level faster than it would have otherwise. It could be deforestation affecting the biodiversity of the planet, which could have all kinds of repercussions. It could be something like CFCs reacting with O[3] in the polar regions, a problem we solved by finding substitutes.

To me the anti-human, anti-reality notion is to avoid making provisions for billions of us to live an affluent life. With industrialization came wealth but also the enlightenment and criminal justice systems that in the modern world replaced feuds and duels to solve disputes. I want that for everyone. I want everyone's right to their life and to be let alone to be protected. Earth Day reminds us of one part of making this happen.
