Real Life Plagiarizes My Fiction
Okay, so yesterday, after a controlled burn, a wildfire got going up in Logan county near Edmond.
As some know, I've been planning out / working on a series of books; "Roarke's Drift", "Continental Drift" and "Galactic Drift".
It's a kind of "Count of Monte Cristo" / "The Stars My Destination" story; a guy, Eddie Roarke, who loses everything and everyone important to him, is rescued from suicide, gets incredibly lucky, takes it as a sign, and decides to get even with those responsible for his loss, in a big way.
The "Drift" of the story is the steam-powered dirigible he builds to provide a luxury travel experience between Oklahoma City and Tulsa for the wealthy. Naturally the powers of collectivism (EPA, big labor, the 1%-ers, etc) try to destroy him.
As part of his effort to promote his airship, he takes governor Franklin (cough Mary Fallin cough) and Mayor Bugle (cough Mickey Cornet cough) on a short luxury trip from the capital up to Guthrie.
On the way they encounter firefighters battling a wildfire in Logan county, divert course, dump the ballast tanks to help extinguish the blaze, and send crewmen down to rescue the trapped firemen. This wins governor Franklin over, which becomes vital at the end of Roarke's Drift and beginning of Continental Drift.
(from the Fox25 article on the fire linked above: "On Monday, Governor Mary Fallin said 2,500 acres had been burned and the State has put in a request with the federal government for a big air tanker out of Arizona. She said the tanker is the largest one that can deliver water." I bet the Drift could deliver more if Roarke retrofitted her.)
I've left out key points of the plot on purpose (can't give it all away), but between this wildfire and someone on another thread talking about robots replacing human workers, my stories are going to become old news before they're even written!
