Jay Carney has just announced that the toughest sanctions to date are about to be implemented against Russia: he has personally promised to temporarily cover up the Soviet posters in his house!

As I recall FDR used sanctions against Japan to sucker them into attacking Pearl Harbor.
That's about how effective sanctions will be against a powerful player... who, in this case, could be a valuable and natural ally at this time in history when the US needs friends.

Ahh, I'll bet Putin's shakin' in his boots. As bad as we're scaring him now he'll probably take back all the lost remnants of the USSR, and maybe even then some.

Other than all politicians love war to distract from their bumbling and evil acts, why is this of American interest?

Yes, politicians love wag the dog wars; they love finding external enemies and diverting attention elsewhere. That said, Putin is doing exactly what Hitler did in Czechoslovakia in 1938 - stir up artificial, paid with Russian money discontent so that he can move troops in to "protect" ethnic Russians that are supposedly abused. Evidently, Crimea was not quite enough; the rest of the Ukraine, plus the Baltic republics would be a nice addition.
Is it America's problem? Not for a few years. But, look back at the history of the 20th century, and you can trace every major war to prior appeasement. Any reason that this one should be any different? Of course, had America been strong economically in the first place, with well-developed energy supplies, it could easily have supplied Europe, both Western and Eastern, with energy, cutting off Russia's primary income, and none of this would have happened. Of course, our Comrade President would never do anything like that.

Thank you for the explanation and I agree with most of it. Looking at history, I do not see that WWI or WWII were of US concern. Certainly the outcome was socialism collapsed of its own weight — as predicted by Rand. Look at Viet Nam. Even though the US had a draft and lost some 58,000 lives (not to mention wounded). For what? Viet Nam is now a tourist destination. My point is: as bad as it is, we do not have a dog in this fight and we should follow the words of Pres Washington: trade with all, get involved with the politics of none.

8^) I was all prepared for it to be something way more lame than a good joke..

The thing is, I know lots of Russians and I don't know any of them that would not be vaguely annoyed with those posters hanging around in the kitchen like that.

Of course; they left the Soviet Union because they wanted to be free of it. Ironically, the concepts of communism and socialism are alive and well in America among the elites because they provide them the same benefits and accoutrements as monarchies did in the past. That is, within a monarchy, both the nobles and the plebeians believe that the social order is just and everyone is fairly happy without any guilt trips. In socialism and, ultimately, in communism, the elites, who are better than all others, have everything, but with every bite they take, they think of the malnourished. The malnourished, while not taking many bites, somehow believe that the future will be better. Thus, everyone is fairly happy…
