Profiles In Irrelevance, by Robert Gore

Saying you will make America great again, or that America is still great, means nothing if you have no idea what actually made America great in the first place. It had nothing to do with “more” or cradle-to-grave, the American Imperium, democratic socialism, time for a woman, or the art of the deal. If this is to be a campaign of slogans, it would at least offer a measure of solace if baseball hats read: Get the Hell Out of Our Way!, Leave Us Alone!, or Don’t Tread on Me! Unfortunately, such truly revolutionary sentiments are not on display, much less a truly revolutionary philosophy. Anyone expecting revolutionary results will be sorely disappointed.

Yup, the solution to our problem is really quite simple even though political campaigns & politicians want use to believe it is complicated. We simply need less government and more freedom.

That requires not only the expectation of rights but the willingness to assume responsibilities coupled to those rights. Not a definition that describes the majority of the country. the problem then goes back to people willing to be serfs, slaves, servants, what have you as preference.

The majority of people want a king again. They want someone else to own everything and be responsible for everything, and they are willing to give away freedom to have someone else think for them.

Robert...love the way you frame the issue...spot on...
i sent a "Manifesto for Economic Greatness and Job Creation" to the Trump campaign a short while ago...with specifics on getting serious about the details of his "make America Great" promise...i.e., Congress and the President pledge not to take a salary until the budget was balanced...social security refunded...and more...still awaiting a reply...will not hold my breath on that one...Trump is an opportunist, created by the desparation that most Americans feel about the future...from my understanding of economics, we are far past the point of a return to a responsible govt, this the slow slide into a facist apocalypse

Trump can want us to make america great again, and perhaps he can offer some inspiration. But he cant MAKE america great through being president- WE the people made america great and can make it great again.

In my small corner of the world, for me to make it great- free me from government nonsense like doing payroll paperwork to satisfy the government coffers, get rid of the stupid $650 annual state business license fees for which I get nothing, get rid of making me collect sales taxes from my customers, stop taxing me 35% of every dollar over $50k that my business has to report in "profit" each year. In addition, get rid of the various school taxes that I have to pay for children that I DO NOT HAVE. Things like that will help ME make my little corner of the world great, and will help make America Great Again.

Thank you for putting into words in a succinct manner what many of us think. To do what is needed is like diet and exercise. Even though the results are obvious, it requires a dedication that is off-putting to many of us. What it amounts to is that no one can get elected by telling the truth. Even if all the power were in the hands of benevolent dictator, Robert Gore, he would be confronted with a bloody revolution very quickly. trying to get the country to do the right thing would be like trying to get a three year old to take a vaccination shot. You can tell him it's just like a little mosquito bite all day long, but once he sees that needle -- fugget aboudit.

The trick is the balance between "Don't Tread on Me," and "Join or Die." The rugged individual forging new vistas on his own is an inspiring picture, but commerce requires interaction, cooperation, and support. Determining the optimum management structure for a prosperous, efficient, lawful society has always been the prime challenge for human communities.

The Constitution was the American community's attempt at creating that fine-tuned machine of government, and if we'd left well enough alone (except for the 3/5ths person rule for black Americans) things would be a lot less complicated today.

The headache today is the two opposing camps that are increasingly at the ends of the semantic spectrum. The words "progress" and "restore" have the taint of obscenity to the opposing members of the political field.

It's awkward to develop political slogans that fit on a campaign hat - worse than bumper stickers, and definitely harder than "tweets" of 140 characters. The intellectual and inspirational content is difficult to capture, and can be unintelligible to someone outside the development team. As you point out, the precise meaning is (deliberately?) open to liberal interpretation. "Hope and Change" is probably the most overused and meaningless phrase ever developed.

Inspired vision for constructive improvements in American society has to go beyond the slogan mentality. Highly detailed pronouncements of one person's vision of how to do that run the risk of limiting one's actions. Trump has remained purposely vague because of that, which leaves him free to take whatever action needed to achieve improvements in the economy, in education, in foreign relations unfettered by the cry of "But you said . . ."

The 3/5 of a person rule was for slaves, regardless of color. A free black American was a full person.

Simply put the south wanted full credit for slaves as people in representation and the north said no, if they are property then you get nothing. the 3/5 rule was a compromise. One that was thought to get rid of slavery eventually as free states would have much higher representation than states which had large bodies of slaves.

Anyone freed became a full person when determining the number of representatives in the house. The only thing that had to due with color was that most slaves were black. It was free or slave that made the difference.

Ever so true...as many are saying, but being ignored is the fact that we have a responsibility in this process, it's hard, it's not pretty and infers accountability on our part for how things turned out.
True, we were fooled, a hairs width at a time over more than 100 years. For all those years, we took the easy way out. We can't change the country or the culture until the culture changes itself. At some point in this process we must deal with reality, you can't have your cake and eat it too unless someone bakes the cake.
That someone is You, not one, but all...no strong man exists that will bring it about by himself. Not satan nor Jesus; not even a trump.

in another sense, our nation's founders created a "deal"
which actually made america great. . they protected us,
to the extent that they could, from a cancerous government
which would hurt us. . their protection lasted over 100
years, which is quite an achievement. -- j

Yeah, I don't think I've heard a word about the $19 trillion debt!
I've listened to Trump and Cruz talk quite a bit. I've been listening to the now bygone GOP candidates too. You'd think there was no massive debt.
As for the two top Dems,I have little patience when it comes to listening to the liar or the socialist.
