Mississippi Sex-Ed Curriculum Teaches Students That Homosexuality Is Illegal

Note that they aren't trying to teach that same-sex marriage is illegal (which is technically true in Mississippi), but rather that homosexuality itself is illegal. Apparently Mississippi doesn't want students in its public schools to find out about Lawrence vs. Texas...

Good grief! Live and let live. Why are they teaching this? It bugs me when a school/policy butts into what they have no business in. Yes, there are laws which exist in states which ban homosexuality, but most places ignore that, because its ridiculous, and how can it possibly be enforced? I don't know anyone who bats an eye over what a person's choices are relating to their preferences in a partner. Nobody's business. These are archaic blue laws, and need to be struck down.

It is another archaic law that is untenable. You would think they had better things to do. Regardless of one's personal beliefs, this is not the business of the state or of public education.

Yeah, it's ironic because conservatives are always complaining about how they don't want homosexuality to be taught in the classroom, but apparently they actually DO want it to be taught after all, just so long as it gets condemned in the process. They never really wanted public schools to remain neutral on the subject.

The subject shouldn't be brought up period... or sex of any kind, for that matter. How did it ever become the school's job to teach kids about sex anyway? It's creepy and wrong.

Well, I actually think sex-education is important. I don't see the point in insisting that kids remain ignorant simply because of some misguided "moral" agenda. Kids need to learn how the world works. That's what school is for.

Why do you assume they would 'remain ignorant' if the school doesn't teach them about sex. That should NOT be there job. What do you mean by 'moral agenda' exactly? (This has nothing to do with conservatism so don't go there.)

The purpose of school is to teach. Putting any limitations on what subjects should be taught is silly.

So then..EVERYTHING is the schools place to teach about? Then I guess it's okay to teach that being gay is illegal in Mississippi. Make up your mind Maph, you can't have it both ways. (Is NOTHING left up to the parents to teach their OWN kids, the way they want them taught? No boundaries for the government? Seriously Maph..you scare me.)

Actually, there's a pretty distinct difference between banning a subject entirely and specifying how it should be presented. I would be perfectly fine with the subject of homosexuality being presented in a sex-ed class in public schools, just so long as the curriculum presented it in a manner that was either neutral or accepting. Though I wouldn't mind if the school chose to remain totally silent on the issue and not even bring it up. It's only the condemnation of it that I would disapprove of.

If parents really feel the need to have that much control over what their child learns, then they can enroll them in a private school or participate in home school.

Yes, parents should indeed do just that, since the public (government run) schools seems to think it's up to them to decide these things because they know better than parents. They really have no business discussing any of it.

I disagree. I think public schools should be able to discuss the issue if they so choose. If parents don't like it, they can send their kids to a private school or do home school. There's always options.

Teachers need to spend their time on math, science, history, lit, art and a strong emphasis on shop (welding, woodworking, electronics, mechanics, etc.).

Scrap all this touchie feelie nonsense and ANYTHING to do with sex - kids have the internet, they'll figure it out, - we did.

TEACH the kids how to live and survive and to make what they need. Sex is what happens between kids when parents are NOT breathing down their necks - if they are building cars and houses and finding out what it takes to live, they WILL make good decisions.

Are you serious?? Who the hell pays for that public school?

Seems to me if you want crap taught to your kids, YOU should put your kids in private school or home school.

Maph that's very inconsiderate. Essentally you are saying that parents have no right to a say so in their children's education or what they are exposed to and if they don't like it they can pay for public education but find an alternative that puts more hardship on you.
