I'm ex-USNavy, been an electronics technician, control systems field engineer, software engineer, technical writer and was born when transistors were replacing tubes. I 'went Galt' in 2006.

Wow...I can't believe that I am this late in saying 'HI'!

Glad to see someone that may also remember taking his TV tubes down to the 7-11 and testing them....

They had that at 7-11? I remember going to radio shack with my grandfather to do that. I was always fascinated with by the tools and test equipment in his garage.

        Oh yes they did!

A stand alone machine with a zillion sockets and a screen that decided your tubes fate. The one thing you feared was that your tubes were OK...what then!!!

Tube amplifiers (early stereo) were 'sweet'. Made music personal...kind of like "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". One with the medium.

I remember when the vinyl LP racks carried two versions of new releases: MONO and STEREO.

But, then again...I also remember when I could see my toes while standing up.
