Ideally, the actor playing John Galt in Atlas Shrugged Part 3 will appear to have jumped right off of the pages of Atlas Shrugged. However, in our quest to find the perfect John Galt, some tough choices may have to be made. That's where you come in.

If you had to choose, which would you consider the number one priority in casting John Galt?

A. As long as the actor looks and acts like John Galt, I don't care what his personal beliefs are.
B. The actor needs to possess a deep understanding of, and passion for, Ayn Rand's ideas first and foremost.

    A. Actors are actors, whether they do or do not believe in the character they are portraying. The quality of the actor will make or break the part played.

Who would hire someone based on ideology, a bureaucrat or a capitalist? If the search is limited to people who walk in lock step with us, the position will not be awarded to the most deserving. In other words, is the job going to be given or awarded?

There were so many great actors that came out of WWII that it seems as though there are several to choose from the Iraq & Afghanistan wars. Time to groom some new actors to take back the Hollywood culture to follow in John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart footsteps!

It is more important that the actor be a good actor, and have an appearance similar to Galt's description. I don't really care if the actor disagrees: this is a motion picture, and I vote for a quality motion picture. That doesn't mean casting a "star" it just means casting someone good at acting.

I see mentions of John Corbett and Timothy Olyphant, and I think either would at least look the part, even though they are older than Galt is described (30s, as I recall). No matter who it is though, he should have copper hair, just like Dagny should be angular. It was mentioned so many times in the book, that ignoring it in the movie is just disappointing (see casting of Dagny and others in part 2).

A poorly made movie isn't going to cause people to THINK as much as a well made movie will. When the movie is distracting in its bad-ness, the message gets completely lost.

Somewhere there is a complete unknown who is perfect for this role. Find that guy.

An actor can act like his costume fits even when it doesn't. An actor can't act as Galt if he doesn't have and understanding of and sympathy for who Galt is.
I agree completely with your last sentence, but not with your idea of what "perfect for this role" actually is.

I do not see an actor portraying John Galt unless he would have the understanding and passion for Any Rand's ideas. To cast some mediocre talent for this part or someone like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon or another leftwing ideologue would be an absolute insult to the character of John Galt and thesis of Atlas Shrugged.

IDEALLY both A&B would be the proper answer but its not realistic. So A is my choice. If I may suggest an actor to play John Galt: Brett Cullen. I'm not crazy about DB Sweeny playing Galt.

    A and B.

If AS3 IS well-made and well-received, I don't want anyone on tour or in a TV interview who would in any way argue against the philosophy of The Book. That would be stupid as well as self-destructive.

Second, JG, as I pictured him during my first three readings of AS, was someone younger than Hank Rearden and maybe younger than Dagny, but not much. Mid-30s at most.

---Someone who's been through engineering and philosophy schools AND had a decade or more to solidify his ethics, morals, philosophy and inventions before realizing the cancerous threat that government has/had become.

Without both ingredients, I think the total effect of AS3 would be greatly diminished.

I would like to offer up a couple of suggestions that might seem out there but I think either one could easily handle the role. My first and is ideal candidate is Paul Bettany and my second choice would be Alan Tudyk.

B- Absolutely. If only Gary Cooper were still around. The actor must be a conservative, and must have read and deeply understand Rand. John Wayne and Clint Eastwood were GREAT, because they brought their very soul into the roles they played. Jason Beghe was good as Hank Reardon. Better than his predecessor, who was too much a "pretty-boy" male model type. Which big-box-office actors could be good ? - Gary Sinise, hands down. Get him to play John Galt, and this movie will make a difference. I'd invest money as a"producer" if you try to get Sinise. He has the persona, the character, and you can be certain he's read the book. Second Choices that might fit the bill? : Kurt Russell, Bruce Willis, Jim Caviezel, Lorenzo Lamas, Dean Cain -- maybe -- Adam Baldwin ?

    B. My choice as John Galt would be Bruce Willis. I'm sure he would do it for a song to bring forth the message. As would Clint Eastwood as Director. Jon Voight, Janine Turner, Raquel Welch, Angie Harmon & Bo Derek. And please have Esai Morales reprise his role as Francisco he was terrific!

PLEASE!!! If anyone answers B run for the Gultch or the cemetery. My 15 year old has been SAG for 12 years and read A S when he was 9. Why he isn't part of this film is a mistake. He easily could play Quentin Daniels. Contact me................
    As for Galt???
