Ideally, the actor playing John Galt in Atlas Shrugged Part 3 will appear to have jumped right off of the pages of Atlas Shrugged. However, in our quest to find the perfect John Galt, some tough choices may have to be made. That's where you come in.

If you had to choose, which would you consider the number one priority in casting John Galt?

A. As long as the actor looks and acts like John Galt, I don't care what his personal beliefs are.
B. The actor needs to possess a deep understanding of, and passion for, Ayn Rand's ideas first and foremost.

One of the best newcomers is Pål Sverre Hagen from KON TIKI. A fantastic range, regal & tall.

John Galt needs to be the perfect man. Clear eyed, sharp features and an intense commanding focus.

If you've seen KON TIKI, then you'll get to experience Pål's excellent range. Scoop him up or someone will. ;-)

Please have someone who can act well and who has great chemistry with the Dagny actress. The actor has to have a spark in his eye and a passion for getting into the character. Frankly, I don't care if his politics are different than mine, as long as he can be the character on screen. Please think about getting someone who is relatively unknown for this role because John Galt is "unknown" to the world until this part of the book.

that's a tough one as I expect both. For an actor to portray John Galt, they need to identify with the character and if they don't it would be a sham,

    A. A good actor is a good actor. Taylor Schilling is a liberal, but she did a great portrayal of Dagny Taggart. (That's not to put down Samantha Mathis at all; she also was a great Dagny.)

    I vote Benedict Cumberbatch.
Yes, he's English and probably socialistic (he is an Obama supporter, last I heard), but he is extremely talented--and isn't a major part of Objectivism about choosing talent? Realistically, he's a big name and could attract more viewers internationally, which the movies do need.
He does come from a wealthy, hard-working family, and so I assume he understands the value of the dollar. Maybe.
But he's talented. Very. I could see him playing Galt.

I believe A and then B. While I don't know if Damien Lewis is even aware of Ayn Rand or Atlas Shrugged, I believe that after a reading, he would knock people's socks off as John Galt. With a powerful yet quiet persona that reflects strength and character, he carried the Band of Brothers series. I am an engineer, and Lewis would be believable as an engineering genius.

I liked the 'roustabout' that showed up to fix Dagny's train in Part 2...the one that actually remembered John Galt from his 20th Century Motor days.

Give him a trim, and let him rip!

I can make arguments for both so I don't think it matters. Hire the actor that does the best audition. If they don't believe in the role or the subject matter, they will eliminate themselves.

    B. Gary Cooper had the right look for Howard Roark in the Fountainhead, but the actor wasn't credible because he didn't believe in what he was saying. Whoever plays Galt should have a fundamental agreement with the words he will be saying.

Damien Lewis is a British actor, but if owing only to his performance in Band of Brothers, I believe he would make a fine John Galt. He has a persona that exhibits integrity and sincerity and is a good speaker.

Rand Paul! He'd be great (he's even good looking.) Not sure he has the actor's chops, however. Well, then again, standing up day after day in front of that bunch without projectile vomiting would take some acting ability. Matt Damon would be my choice of major actor.

I would like to see someone who believes in the book Atlas Shrugged and see's what is going on in the real world compared to what Ayn Rand knew. Most actors are what they are as long as the paycheck goes in the bank. Playing John Galt will be tough but, I have faith in the people who do the choosing.
