Indians and Eskimos

There is a piece in the Washington Post today about the high rate of teenage suicide in Indian and Eskimo reservations. They blame everything imaginable and relate all that has been spent and done that has not helped, in fact somehow it just keeps getting worse. It seems to me that when there was little known about our origin, history was oral, and knowledge of others was not widely dispersed, the Tribe was probably necessary to preserve the life and safety of the members. To preserve the Tribe, the members were taught that they "belonged" to the tribe. There is no concept of the individual owning his own life. Any group of people that live on a reservation at the mercy of a government that feel that they only exist as a part of that group are going to feel a lot of despair. There is no hope or sense of self worth. There is nothing to aspire to. Drugs and alcohol add to the woes and more give away programs further erode self esteem. The idea that Native Americans should be "taken care of" on pieces of land assigned to them is completing the genocide that was interrupted in the early 20th Century. The saddest part is that we have partially done the same thing to the slaves that were freed in 1863 and the cradle to grave social programs that are in store for the rest of us will lead to the same fate. Any organization of humans not based on individual rights will fail by killing off all its constituents.

Among the tribe there is generational victim-hood which is perpetuated with all the 'free' or subsidized stuff. I continually see things given, provided or subsided just because of who your ancestors were often has little to no value. Destroy it, it will be replaced. Drink your rent money, they'll cover the bill. Want a free college education? Ok, not a problem we built you a big beautiful campus and will pay you $10K a year to go. Don't want to take responsibility for your life? You don't have to, you poor victimized thing you. This is not the case with all tribal members, but a significant number it is.

It is just around the corner for all of us. No job. No problem, here is permanent unemployment/welfare. No money for college, no problem, here is a Pell grant. No health care, no problem, here is your Obamacare subsidy. No food, no problem, here is your food stamps. Didn't save for retirement, no problem, here is Social Security. Afraid of your neighbor, no problem, just let the police take care of it. Afraid of unseen enemies, no problem, Homeland Security will keep you safe with the help of NSA, FBI, CIA, FDA, EPA, ATF, TSA and a thousand more will protect you if you just give in to letting them into your life a little.

How long before you drink? Do drugs? Hang yourself?

Indians are burdened with a collective cultural tradition which is incompatible with modern capitalism. They know it, they resent it and most wish their ancestors had made very different decisions.

A closer look will reveal the ugly truth: high school graduation rates, college graduation rates, alcoholism, average earned income and net worth - all at the ends of the bell curve.

Children do not born with a cultural tradition, they learn it from their elders. Tribes that submitted to the government, became dependent and rejected reason for myth, produce generation after generation of depressed, hopeless dropouts and addicts. Those that have a strong sense of self instead of tribe reject the reservation and are producers in our society. It is a cop-out to reject the modern world as "white man's" society.

"As an example, observe the Balkan nations, which are perennially bent upon exterminating one another over minuscule differences of tradition or language. Tribalism had no place in the United States—until recent decades. It could not take root here, its imported seedlings were withering away and turning to slag in the melting pot whose fire was fed by two inexhaustible sources of energy: individual rights and objective law; these two were the only protection man needed." AR, Philosophy, Who Needs It?
I see a perfect dovetail with this post and the issues going on in the Ukraine. The adherence to language and traditions which set groups apart can also be the cause of dehumanizing practices. Are the young tribe members coerced into thinking they are not individuals but part of the tribe's greatness and therefore owe responsibilities they may not wish? The US was founded on two major tribalistic deal killers: Individualism and Freedom. Interesting discussion, coal.
