My former department head did not want to offer the department office coordinator to the best qualified person for the job about 15 years ago, saying that she would never take the position because it was a $5 per hour pay cut. I convinced my then boss to offer her the position. She took it and made out handily in the long run by getting her kids' tuition paid for by the university. I am glad we hired her!
