Golden rice in field trials
In 2000, golden rice was developed - a rice that contains beta carotene. This rice was intended to be a resource to end the half million annual cases of blindness and death that resulted from Vitamin A deficiency. (The upper end of these figures is closer to 2 million.)
Its distribution has been almost single handedly blocked by Greenpeace since that time. An improved variety was developed in 2005. That too was blocked.
Now, at last, golden rice is being given a chance in Bangladesh.
That is over 7 million deaths that Greenpeace can add to their tally. Congrads, guys. Glad you made the world a little safer by blocking a GMO crop.

I am glad someone still worships heroes. Who is on your short list?
