Faith of Our Fathers? "What Ike’s America saw as decadence, Obama’s America calls progress."

"During the 1950s, the twin pillars of worldwide anti-communism were Dwight Eisenhower’s America and the Roman Catholic Church of Pope Pius XII.

"During the 1980s, the last decade of the Cold War, Ronald Reagan and the Polish pope, John Paul II, were the pillars of resistance.

"When Pope Francis arrives in Washington on Tuesday afternoon, the country he enters will be a very different one from Eisenhower’s America or Reagan’s America. And Catholics will be welcoming a new kind of pope."

In America 2015, homosexuality, abortion on demand and same-sex marriage—shameful crimes in Ike’s America, mortal sins in the catechism of Pius XII—have become constitutional rights.

I’ll buy that some aspects of Christianity were a beneficent influence in early America, but Buchanan seems to think that that Christianity was Catholic when in fact it was practically all various sects of Protestant. Catholics were but a tiny percent of the population of early America. Then around 1890 to 1920 the Irish, Italian and Polish Catholics came and eventually helped elect FDR.

Taki’s Magazine is generally pretty good, by the way.

A good chunk were Church of England which was as close to be Catholic in those days as you could get without gushing over the Pope. Pomp and Circumstance. In the US they are called Episcopals. My apologies if I didn't spell that correctly. to the North mostly anti Catholics to the south what some called Cavaliers the aristocracy but still not Catholic. Many went back to England during their civil war between the two groups from the Puritan camp.
Catholics were Mississippi, Gulf Coast, Florida then Maryland under Lord Baltimore then Quebec area. Until the main wave of Irish and Italians arrived in the 1800's Areas like pennsylvania mostly Protestant and the Scandihoovians skipped further west 1840 to 1900 Minnesota and the Dakotas. Back to what you were saying...

Not sure how this relates to Objectivism. The article is written from a social conservative point of view.

More education if nothing else. Can't live too sheltered a life. however you are correct. One interesting comment Taki makes is the use of liberal and conservative which has strayed far from the real meanings. I'm not sure what social conservative means unless you still hold to suits with vests and a tray inside the front door for cards.

Conservative - Make changes slowly thoughtfully without haste and never in a rush or by illegal means if it can be helped. More practical.

Liberal make changes fast with out regard for the consequences or thinking much at all. Live for the moment pragmatic.

Typically or traditionally groups in power are very conservative protecting their turf - fortifying. While liberals are the outsiders using any means to get into a position of power. They want it all an they want it now., Having got it they abruptly change to keeping it.

In modern terms liberal means an air head valley girl reloading with an air pump and finishing all sentences with a question mark

Like fascist the terms really have nought to do with political spectrum nor does it have to be political.

You can't get more conservative as regards change than the aristocracy and the modern day aristocracy has left memories of pretensions of royalty and a let them eat ethanol attitude. Recall the first Demo convention when Clinton was nominated. Rember Chelsea's royal back of the hand wave and Mom's approving smile?' That kids being groomed for something in the dynasty of ....which is not to excuse the former separate Republicans but another example is Pelosi.

In today's context, "social conservatives" are those who attempt to employ political and legal power to force everyone else to live by the traditional and/or religious values that they espouse. Examples are laws forbidding abortion, the sale and use of certain drugs, and gay marriage.

Those poor tired overworked terms. In one breath they serve one view. The next breath the opposite view and in a third a view that no longer exists. The main point seems to be confusion as an attainable goal. The words have been trampled like prejudice and post judice to no apparent purpose but the spur of the moment. Sounds like they are the opposite of secular progressives and other spat on words for their actions are regressive. What you are saying is words mean nothing. I can accept that. It's true.
