On courtesy, an added point. Whenever you communicate you should ask, “To what purpose?” Maybe it is to change the mind of your interlocutor. Maybe it is to play to an audience, to change the minds of its members by demonstrating that your interlocutor is wrong. Maybe it is to rouse people to storm the barricades. Maybe it is to make yourself feel good. Maybe it is to hurt someone else because you—legitimately or not—are frustrated about something.

Some of these are legitimate goals and some not. And there will be different strategies for the legitimate ones. But if changing minds is the goal, courtesy will certainly be a better strategy because you don’t want emotions and biases to fog your reason.

When others—just about all liberals and conservatives—deny that we have rights and assert the right to use force to make us do as they or “society” wishes, making them defend their principles, putting them on the defensive, is certainly a noble goal. But you still must ask, “How can I be most effective?” Sometimes getting in the face of an interlocutor a bit might be best. Sometimes taking them through arguments step by step might work. Sometimes offering compelling examples might get them to think. But there are three crucial things to keep in mind for any communication: audience, audience, and audience. Don’t waste time talking past someone or, if you think they just won’t change their mind and you’re not trying to influence the listening audience, don’t waste your time. Be effective!

@KH my issue is economic. I agree on free travel. Just damn tired of paying taxes that then get given to people for no good reason when they should be working.

The Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital is the United States’ first public health hospital, opened in 1902 and operating as a hospital until 1930. The hospital served as a detention facility for new immigrants who were deemed unfit to enter the United States after their arrival

To make an important point again, we need to apply principles in a real world that, like it or not, often offers choices that not great and even worse. The drug war is a mistake, but Mexican drug gangs in American cities are a reality. The cultures of Islamic countries are to a greater or lesser extent pre-modern. In Egypt, after they overthrew Mubarek, wisely overthrew the Muslim Brotherhood. In Iran in 2009 thousands of people went into the streets against the theocrats. Obama did not back the protesters and the theocrats rule. In other countries the enlightened are a very small minority, It is valid, especially for Europeans, to ask "Who are we letting into our countries?" I'm not necessarily arguing against helping current refugees but pointing out significant portions of the Muslims in some of those countries are as anti-Enlightenment has they come. Check out the Finsbury Mosque in Britain sometime.
