Russia has the Islamic Hoard to their south, names ISIS. A Hoard intending to spread their revolution and way of life worldwide, or destroy the world otherwise. They still remember when they were last overrun by an invading Hoard some centuries back (some cat named Ghengis if memory serves) ...
As Americans, at least for now, sitting across the pond it's easy to deride Russia as "playing aspirational games", but by backing Syria (and Assad) against ISIS/ISIL, they're trying not to relive the Mongol Invasion.
OF course, the potential "hoard" is getting their way, having an easy way to pad their numbers behind the lines as "poor refugees"... and the EU (and US) is standing there, holding the gate open, begging them to c'mon in...
Just something to think about.
I certainly wouldn't be unduly surprised.
