I ended up joining that Astro group that my neighbor spoke about, It was a great father/son thing to do with my kid. I eventually did a monthly nighttime lecture there on binoculars and star gazing. Telescopes are a real pain in the ass: a very fussy piece of equipment. Binoculars on the other hand are as simple as point and view. Much, much cheaper too.
