Seems like a good program to me. As long as it doesn't detract from regular class time in any significant way, I don't see what the big deal is. The guy who organized the protest is aligned with homophobic and anti-feminist groups, so that should tell you something about his motivations...
Based on this article, the program just seems to be about countering gender stereotypes, NOT teaching kids that they're gender-neutral. The article even states that such claims were being propogated by the protesters, and not school officials.
It sounds like the continuum fallacy, in which someone argues that because there's a continuum between two things the two things are actually the same.
