I'm reading 'We The Living' right now. I'm about 1/2 through. Sometimes I have to put it down and walk away. It comes down to join a trade union or the party or starve. You couldn't get a job unless you were a member of a trade union and you couldn't join the trade union unless you had a job. So many parallels with past and present.
That book was so terrible in its truth. It made me ill while reading it. And that is the road we are on here. Scary!!! This is also a book which needs to be on required reading lists. High school students should read this. I'm glad that you are! Btw, a dear friend of mine is named Kira in honor of the one in the book. Her mother loved AR. Khalling's daughter is, as well.
I feel for you. I went through that last fall. It is shocking really. I think I was most stunned when I discovered that the term "let's party" came from Petrograd. It was a collectivist idea used to cause young people to turn off their minds to advance the communist cause.
The only difference is the USSR went quickly. In the USA, it was much slower. But the path is the same.
It is a powerful story. Consider checking out her early works. these short stories and plays include the early development of the characters in We the Living. And a piece she wrote when quite young, "Kira's Viking" http://www.noblesoul.com/orc/books/rand/...
