Hard to imagine that Americans are this stupid - so what do you think? Has 5 generations of preserving the dumbest citizens and encouraging their reproduction through welfare brought about the sea of stupidity? Or are the pollsters lying?

The posting engine is broken. For some reason, replies are going above the original post instead of below.

So you're saying that if the poll had been taken in 1943, the top vote-getters would have been Hitler, FDR, Stalin and Churchill (most likely in that order)?

I think they're really that stupid and shallow, both in education and ability to measure worth. And I don't think this current state can be reversed in 5 more generations.

Hope I'm wrong, but the pollsters have Clinton and Christie as the front runners right now for 2016. Does that sound like anyone's learned anything in the last several years? Maybe they'll prove me wrong and put Waxman up.

It was an open-ended question. Respondents could identify anyone; and they gave the names they knew from the news.

Off the top of your head, name a living American Nobel laureate whom you personally admire.

Read the entire poll at its source here:

No tallies were large. Counts below 1% did not appear. Look, also, at the historical rankings 1946-2013. Billy Graham is at the top. However, in that same period, the number of Americans who claim NO RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION grew to 20%.

Among the topmost women since 1946 are Margaret Chase Smith and Clare Luce Booth, household names from my childhood, but likely forgotten today.

It is also important to note that as America continues to polarize around deep issues, the "majority" of even 60% hides a very different and significant minority.
